September's Last Hurrah!

Mornin'! September's waving good-bye!  She wasn't that particularly kind to us this year as it's usually the "Jewel" of the year but not quite this year.  It's been kind of cool, wet and windy.  Today's no exception.  It's 61° in Wildwood NJ.  It's raining very lightly.  Humidity's still up there at 90% with a dewpoint of 57°.  Winds are out of the West at 20-30mph +gusting.  It's been raining with that big blow out of the West all night long.  We're saturated and pruned.  No flooding but all the curbs have water.  Thankfully, Ms Sun and those gusty winds will be drying things out today as we're going to have a mix of warm autumn sun and clouds today.  Winds are staying checked in mainly throughout the first half of the day and by this evening will have calmed down significantly.  Expect temps to tap 70° today with West winds at 20-30mph +gusting.  Tonight... clear skies, low of 62° and windy (SW 10-20mph).  Tomorrow... mainly sunny, high of 72°, SW winds at 10-15mph.  The weekend's looking seasonable with temps in the low-mid 60s but plenty of sunshine.  Full Moon is tomorrow with higher than normal tides!  Until next year... See You In September!

Mostly Gray Day

Mornin'!  It's 70° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's still up at 92° with a dewpoint of 69°.  We're under gray, thick cloud cover.  Breezes are out of the South at 13-18mph.  Look for continued cloud cover today as it appears we could be having a rainy day today as there's 60% chance of rain showers and/or thunderstorms.  There's always that slight chance that Ms Sun could make it through and peek in throughout the earlier part of the day.  Temps will be in the mid-70s with South winds kicking up at 10-20mph.  Tonight... 100% chance of rain with some stiff winds out of the S-SW at 20-30mph +gusting.  Temps will drop into the low-60s.  Tomorrow... another cloud filled day with 70% chance of rain along with stiff winds out of the West at 15-25mph.  Just a reminder that the Full Moon is in a couple days (Thursday) and has begun affecting the tides. And, the back marsh side of island gets those high tides an hour after the ocean's high tide.  Be aware if traversing the island during high tide times especially if its raining.  Be cognizant of where you park and don't drive through flood waters.

Last Friday In September

Mornin'!  It's 65° in Wildwood NJ.  It's the last Friday in September!  The Blog's late again due to Senior Citizen Grocery Shopping hours which I had to take advantage of first thing this morning.  I'm back to it with a nice hot cup of coffee, just opened porch windows and a blank page in front of me.  We're under cloud cover.  In fact, there was a little spitting rain coming down about 20 minutes ago.  Now Ms Sun's breaking through with W-SW breezes at 7-9mph.  While I'm typing, sunshine has begun pouring in my porch windows and shining on my face!  Ms Sun's going to keep trying to break on through all day as it's looking like the more we move into the end of the morning and into the afternoon, more clouds will be filling in and giving way for a mostly cloudy day.  Temps will reach the low-70s with S-SW breezes at 5-10mph.  Tonight... cloudy with 30% chance of rain and temps back down to the mid-60s. Breezes will be out of the S-SW at 5-7mph.   Tomorrow... mix of sun and clouds with 20% chance of showers both early morning and mid-afternoon with a high of 72°.  Sunday... partly cloudy, mid-70s.

Mostly Cloudy Thursday

Mornin'!  It's 64° in Wildwood NJ.  We're under cloudy skies.  Breezes are out of the West at 3-5mph.  As I've been researching today's weather for the blog, Ms Sun made her grand entrance and began shining through this morning's thick cloud cover and is now shining in all the windows brightening my home!  Can't get too excited though as we're supposed to have a mix of clouds and sunshine this morning giving way to a mostly cloudy afternoon.  Temps will be in the mid-70s with SW breezes at 5-10mph.  Tonight... still cloudy with temps dropping back down into the low-60s and SW breezes at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... almost a repeat of today... cloudy and mid-70s but with a 20% chance of rain.  Saturday... rain in the morning with a cloudy day to follow and Sunday... partly cloudy with peeks of sunshine.

Happy Autumn!

Mornin'!  Happy Autumn!  It's 50° in Wildwood NJ.  Ms Sun's up and shining on the island.  Breezes have simmered down out of the N-NW at 9-11mph.  Fall is expressing its incredibly lovely self this morning down the Shore.  There is something very special and beautiful about Autumn... in the paraphrased words of Albert Camus "it's when every leaf is a flower" (thanks Jim).  Speaking of which, the leaves have just begun turning and doing their spectacular metamorphosis for the start to this lovely season. The autumn skies and in particular "sunrises and sunsets" are back and breathtaking as always.  Expect a perfect Fall day today as Ms Sun shines in a vivid blue sky, temps reach 70° and NW winds wift (waft) across the island at 10-20mph.  Tonight... clear sky, low of 57°, W-NW winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... sunny, 77° and W-NW winds at 10-20mph.  I love that Autumn is here again.  90 days until the Winter Solstice!  I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the serious beach erosion happening now in North Wildwood due to Hurricane Teddy way off the Coast.  Mother Nature is once again having her way with us.

Mornin'!  It's 52° in Wildwood NJ.  We're in the midst of a windchill this morning as it feels like 45° when stepping outside.  Brrrrrr!!!  The winds are out of the N-NE at 18-25mph creating that chill.  Humidity's at an all time low at 59% with a dewpoint of 37°.  We're also under some major cloud cover at the moment and Ms Sun is up and trying her best to break through it all.  Expect some sunshine today but it'll be a mix of clouds and sun. Temps will get up into the mid-60s.  The N-NE winds aren't going anywhere anytime soon as they'll be ramped up throughout this last weekend of summer at 15-25mph.  Tonight... mainly clear skies with a low of 50° and N-NE winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... lots of sunshine with temps in the mid-60s again and NE winds even stronger at 20-30mph.  Strap in and enjoy this last weekend of Summer!

"Good Year" - Happy Rosh Hashanah - Last Friday of Summer

Mornin'!  It's 67° in soggy Wildwood NJ this last Friday of summer.  Happy start to the Jewish New Year!  It rained beginning yesterday afternoon throughout the night and we're nicely watered.  It's not raining now but we're cloud covered with gray skies.  It's damp outside with breezes very light out of the North at 4-6mph.  The clouds look like they'll be staying checked in today.  There's a chance of rain before 10am.  Expect a cloudy day with temps just tapping 70°.  Those North winds are going to ramp up out at 10-15mph +gusting of 25mph and will switch to the N-NE.  Tonight... lots of cloud cover with temps dropping into the low-mid 50s and those N-NE winds at 15-25mph.  Tomorrow... Ms Sun will be doing all she can to peek through the cloud cover with temps in the mid-60s and you guessed it... N-NE winds at 15-25mph.  Sunday... mostly sunny and still breezy.

New Moon Thursday

Mornin'!  Blog's a bit late as I had to do some errands and it must be done very early in the morning to avoid the COVID crowd.  I'd much rather shop with no one 6 inches away from me.  Even with it being after Labor Day and island inhabitants normally becoming almost non-existent, my guess (and it's been my guess since the beginning of August) that anyone with no reason to return to their homes, are staying down the Shore.  It's much busier than normal here... thus, the COVID crowd.  We've still got to share with the extra people that are here in their second homes and of course those "off-season" vacationers.  It's 73° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 79% with a dewpoint of 67°.  Breezes are out of the W-SW at 4-6mph.  It's hazy and partly cloudy.  Ms Sun's trying to shine through the haze.  I'm assuming it's that wildfire smoky haze we're still getting.  But, she's definitely trying to shine but will be giving up soon as the cloud cover will take over the skies this morning. There's a 50% chance of rain today.  Temps will be in the mid-upper 70s with S-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... 90% chance of rain, temps in the mid-60s and S-SE winds shifting to the NE at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... more rain (80% chance) with clouds in the afternoon, temps tapping 70° and N-NE winds ramping up big time at 15-25mph +gusting.  We're going to be feeling the effects of Sally that's for sure.  The weekend... Saturday is partly sunny and very windy and Sunday is partly cloudy and windy.  Yep... it's probably Sally.  Oh... I almost forgot to mention that it's the New Moon today.  The Tides will be reacting to that moon just like it was the Full Moon and we're going to have much higher than normal tides.  With this upcoming rainfall... be cognizant of where you're driving and parking your vehicle.  I'm almost positive we're going to have Tidal flooding.

Hump Day Haze

Mornin'!  It's 58° in Wildwood NJ.  It's hazy and after posting my blog yesterday, I found out that the haze we're having isn't  from the heat and humidity but from the California / Oregon / Washington fires.  It's clear with no clouds in the sky however, Ms Sun is in a heavy haze as she rises this morning.  Breezes are out of the SE at 2-4mph.  It'll be partly cloudy (hazy?) today with a high of 73° with breezes out of the S-SE at 5-10mph.  Tonight... clear (hazy?) with a few passing clouds and temps in the low-mid 60s with S-SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... cloudy, a high of 76° and Southerly breezes at 10-15mph. Much Cooler Weather / Partly Sunny / Partly Cloudy

Mornin'!  It's 57° in Wildwood NJ.  Our temps here haven't been in the 50s since the last week of May.  Since I left most of the windows opened last night, it's a wee-bit chilly in the house this morning.  There's no doubt that Autumn's giving us a sneak preview which is a week from today!  The humidity's 73% with a dewpoint of 47° and we're under cloud cover at the moment.  Winds are stiff... out of the N-NE at 16-22mph.  These morning clouds are supposed to break apart and allow Ms Sun through off and on today.  Expect partly sunny / partly cloudy conditions with temps barely tapping 70° and NE winds at 10-20mph.  Tonight... clear to partly cloudy with temps heading into the upper 50s again.  Winds will have simmered down out of the East at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... almost a repeat of today with sun and clouds, much less in the wind department and warmer... mid-70s.  One thing I must mention is the rip currents.   There's an alert-warning posted as the surf is in the danger zone due to these currents.  Entering the surf is discouraged.  These currents are life-threatening and can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water holding their grasp.   Also, the "New Moon" is Thursday and you may notice the high tides are much higher than normal.  Be aware if in a low-lying area on the island.  The tide water does seep onto the streets... rain or shine.

Breezes are light out of the North at 5-7mph.  It's cloudy with Ms Sun up and over the horizon but trying to shine through it all.  She'll eventually get through as it'll be a partly sunny day with temps tapping 80° as the humidity begins to drop down and by mid-day it'll be around 57%.  Winds will continue to be out of the North at 10-15mph.  Tonight... mainly clear, low of 57° with North winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... a much cooler day with a high of 69° and breezes out of the NE at 10-20mph.

Rip Roaring Saturday

Mornin'!  It's 69° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 70% with a dewpoint of 60°.  This morning's weather certainly has that Autumn feel to it.  Humidity's gone and it's breezy as hell... E-NE 18-22mph.  Ms Sun's up as she just broke through the morning cloud cover.  It's so nice to have her shining as it seems like it's been forever since sunshine was part of the seascape around here.  We're going to have a mix of clouds and sun today with gusty winds (E-NE 20-30mph) higher wind gusts are possible.  Temps will be in the low-70s.  Tonight... 20% chance of precipitation with partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Low of 66° with stiff winds out of the East at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... cloudy early turning to partly cloudy with temps in the upper 70s and winds out of the E-SE at 5-10mph.  It's "Biker Weekend" which has been cancelled.  No permits were issued by the City for the usual biker stuff... food vendors, biker tents, outdoor entertainment venues etc., but the Bikers came and infiltrated anyway.  I guess Wildwood wouldn't been the same the weekend after Labor Day without Harleys roaring loudly throughout the island.

Looking Gray and Wet Today

Mornin'!  It's 76° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 99% with a dewpoint of 74°.  It's raining lightly as Ms Sun's crossing the horizon doing her best to break through the clouds at the horizon (there is a break in the morning clouds right at the horizon and it's a sight to see). Breezes are out of the E-SE at 7-9mph.  It's thick and heavy outside with humidity and damp, aromatic (marshy) fragrance in the air.  Expect a wet day with 80% chance of rain and thunderstorms today.  There's a potential for heavy rainfall today.  That also means potential for tidal flooding on the island.  Be aware of low-lying areas prone to flooding and where you park your vehicle.  Temps will be in the upper 70s with very high humidity.  Breezes will be out of the SE at 5-10mph.  Tonight... more rain on tap (80% chance) with a low of 74° and SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... 60% chance of rain with N-NE winds checking in at 20-30mph.  The weekend's still looking "eh" with Saturday now being partly cloudy and very windy as Sunday's got some rain in its forecast.  I feel sorry for those here on this not-so-nice week and the start to the "shoulder season" in the Wildwoods.

(the only word I've got for this is "VOTE")
Mornin'!  It's 67° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 79% with a dewpoint of 59°.  Breezes are out of the West at 2-3mph.  We're coming off low-tide and the mucky, fishy aromas are heavy in the still, cool air.  The weather's perfect this early morning down the Shore.  The seagulls can vouch for me as they're everywhere showing their pleasure by laughing and squawking.  It'll be a lovely day with plentiful sunshine, temps in the upper 70s (maybe tapping 80°) with Southerly breezes at 5-10mph.  Tonight... clear, temps in the upper 60s and SE breezes at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... a repeat of today with more perfection.

Labor Day Weekend Celebration Has Begun

Mornin'!  It's 75° in Wildwood NJ.  We had a nice heavy rain last night (actually it was a crazy thunderstorm with many, many lightning strikes).  Everything's watered and soaking wet this morning including the air.   Humidity's 92% with a dewpoint of 73°.  Breezes are barely there out of the NW at 4-6mph.  Ms Sun's shining over the horizon.   It's a perfect morning down the shore.  The neighborhood has begun to fill up as there are vehicles parked as far as the eye can see.  And, we're not even close to being crammed in yet.  It's coming as it's the last hurrah for the 2020 season as most seasonal rentals end Labor Day.  For this Labor Day's weekend weather it'll begin today with lots of sunshine, lower humidity, temps in the mid-upper 80s, and W-NW winds at 5-10mph.  Tonight... partly cloudy, temps in the upper60s/low70s with W-SW winds at 4-6mph.  Tomorrow... more of the same with lower temps and humidity and plenty of sunshine.  Sunday and Monday... same.

Last of the Friday Beach Tips and Beach Etiquette...
~Think "mask".  When walking the streets and beach paths, it can be very close quarters in some areas and it's necessary to wear a mask.  I've noticed when it comes to traversing to and from the beach, rarely are masks worn.
~Give that 6' of space when deciding on that perfect beach campsite.  That means 6' completely surrounding "your site", not just on one side of 6' with 3' on all the other sides.
~Suggestions for the beach... bottle of water, I pack a small spray bottle of water for you never know what, a hat, footwear, sunblock, a towel, insect repellent, first aid kit, shade (umbrella or sand chair w/canopy), phone, something to read, binoculars are fun, something to eat and drink, a small trash bag to collect any trash you may have.
~Phone Use... more often than not (I'm not sure why) beach folk actually get up from their encampment to talk on the phone.  I've seen them encroach and linger at others campsites while talking loudly on their phones.  I still don't understand why this phenomenon happens.  I'm assuming they don't want their immediate party to be disturbed by their conversation on the phone.  Guess what?  No one wants to hear your call... take it somewhere else!
~Let's talk "music"... no one wants to hear your music.  Many self-proclaimed disc jockeys come to the beach thinking we all want to hear their playlists.  Not true.  Pack headphones or at least keep the volume down on your music so that just you and your party can enjoy it.
~Winds... learn the wind direction and wind speed if possible.  I always post it on my blog.  When traversing the beach (hopefully with footwear) be aware of the winds as you walk. If you have sandals and/or flip flops on, rest assured they are producing sand that is blowing right behind you and onto the folks you're walking by.  When planting your umbrella, you may have to take extra steps to secure it on a windy day... use a sand (screw) grabber and/or bungee cord.  It's pretty amazing how insecure some umbrellas can be as the wind lifts and launches them directly to unknowing folks never expecting to be impaled.  Also, shaking towels, blankets etc. away from anyone sitting or laying right near you as your shaken sand may blow directly onto someone's face or sandwich.  Oh... "West" winds always seem to bring the green head biting flies.  If your planned beach day mentions "west winds" prepare with some insect repellent and know that West winds bring the warm, land breeze and make for not quite as refreshing day as you would imagine.
~Note the times of the Tides if heading to the beach so you know where to place that chair and umbrella.  You can always check with the lifeguard once there.  If the tide is at its highest when you arrive, you can plant your spot right at the waters edge as the tide will only retreat the entire day leaving a nice large beach before as the tide diminishes.  After 6 hours, the tide will begin to turn in the other direction.
~Beaches are "No Smoking" or "Designated Smoking Areas" but you can no longer sit at your campsite and smoke.
~No dogs on the beach from May until October.  The Wildwoods have a couple terrific dog parks. 2400 block of the beach and 3000 block of the beach.
~Trash... there are trash and recycle containers everywhere.  Never leave trash on the beach.  Better yet... pick up any that you see whether it's yours or not.
~Children... teach your children beach etiquette.  Most important... teach them awareness of where your campsite is... mark it with a flag if need be or sit near a flag familiar to them so they can find you when distracted or absorbed in play (the beach especially at the water's edge does get crowded and intense at times), if lost... explain that they should always go to a lifeguard for help.  Throwing sand, kicking up sand and running near others, feeding seagulls is a no-no, and all the other normal "pointers for children" should be explained.
~Seagulls... aka: beach vultures have been known to create a bit of havoc on a lovely beach day.  Feeding gulls is a big no-no.  Eat and snack smartly.  Using hands to express oneself while holding your sandwich for a swooping seagull is something you see at least once every beach visit.  Eat under an umbrella or canopy sand-chair as these birds know our eating habits and are just waiting to grab what they can. They will effortlessly pluck your lunch right out of your animated hand.  However, most of the time they'll drop it since it's a kaiser roll and a bit heavy.  Within seconds, every seagull within a 6 block radius will be right at your blanket fighting for dibs at your lunch.  And, seagulls know chip bags so if you're in the water and didn't quite bury your chip bag down into your beach bag, they'll walk onto your blanket and pluck that chip bag right off the top of your beach bag to share with all their seagull buddies. I've seen it many times.
~Playing ball, Frisbee, horseshoes, corn hole, spike-ball, kite-flying etc. is best done at the back of the beach (dune side) or other designated areas for active beach games and is not appropriate right next to people trying to enjoy their day at the beach.
~Always observe and follow beach postings..."closed", "strong rip currents", "surfing only", "no dogs" etc.
~Courtesy is key.  Be kind to one another.  Oh... and keep the profanity at home.  Let's all be happy while enjoying that lovely beach of ours.

Thursday Mix Of Clouds And Sun

Mornin'!  It's 76° in Wildwood NJ.  Ms Sun's up and shining in the cloudless sky!  Breezes are light out of the W-NW at 6-8mph.  Humidity's up at 87% with a dewpoint of 74° and it's warm and summery down the shore.  Expect a mostly sunny day with some light, hazy cloud cover in the mix.  A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible (20% chance).  Temps will be in the mid-80s with W-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... thick cloud cover checks in with 80% chance of rain (possibly thunderstorms) but changing to mainly clear skies after midnight.  Tonight's temps... 74° with SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... mostly sunny with a high of 85°.  The holiday weekend... still 5-Star with plenty of sunshine, lower temps and humidity along with calm breezes.

Full Moon Hump Day!

Mornin'!  It's 74° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 96% with a dewpoint of 73°.  Breezes are barely there out of the S-SE at 2-4mph. We're surrounded by fog (at the beach) and cloud cover surrounding us as Ms Sun has risen brightly without any cloud hurdles right at the horizon.  She has her work cut out for her as she continues to rise and shine through all the remaining clouds. We're supposed to have this fog and cloud cover early, followed by partial clearing as it'll be a partly sunny day. Temps will get into the low-80s with South winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... thick clouds return and take over with the possibility of scattered thunderstorms and/or rain showers.  Some storms could be strong with gusty winds.  Temps will be where they are now... mid-70s with SW winds.  Chance of rain tonight... 50%.  Tomorrow... like today, beginning with clouds, sunny early, then rain and storms scattered throughout the day.  Chance of rain 40%.  At this time, the weekend's looking 5-star.  It's the Full Moon today so the Tides will be much higher than normal.  Be aware of the high tide times and especially where you park your vehicle.  Try and avoid those low-lying areas on the island.

Welcome September!

Cape May NJ
Mornin'!  September's arrived!  Welcome! I can hear Neil Diamond as I type this lovely September morn!  It's 74° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 81% with a dewpoint of 68°.  We're currently under cloud cover with breezes out of the E-SE at 8-11mph.  It looks like we're going to have a mostly cloudy morning, a partly cloudy afternoon and a partly cloudy evening.  There's 20% chance of rain in today's forecast.  Temps will be around 78° with Easterly breezes at 9-11mph throughout today and tonight.  Tonight... partly cloudy with increasing clouds overnight and the possibility of some fog.  Temps will be in the low-70s with East winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... much like today with mostly cloudy skies, a 20% chance of rain, high of 81° and Southerly breezes at 10-20mph.  Just a reminder... the Full Moon is tomorrow.  We may miss it with the cloud cover tonight and throughout the remainder of the week but it still is pulling on the tides.  We'll probably see much higher than normal tides so be aware of low-lying areas on the island that flood waters could seep into.  And, just an fyi... those waters are salty and corrosive and not at all kind to the undercarriage of your vehicle.
