It's The Winter Solstice

The lawn at Congress Hall - Cape May
Mornin'!  Happy Winter!  It's the Solstice and shortest day/longest night of the year.  By that I mean daylight today will be approximately 9 hours of daylight compared to the Summer Solstice (6/21/26) which has over 15 hours of daylight. But, just think... beginning tomorrow, the days begin to grow longer which each passing day.
It's a mild 41° this morning with clear, starlit skies and light winds out of the W-SW at 5-10mph.  We're going to have a mostly sunny day with some clouds in the mix, temps in the upper 40s and W-NW winds at 15-25mph +gusting.  Tonight... clear, starlit skies, temps dropping into the upper 20s and NW winds at 10-20mph +gusting making it feel like we're in the teens.  Tomorrow... sunny, some passing afternoon clouds, temps around 40° with W-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... cloudy with a 20% chance of a passing rain shower, temps in the low-mid 30s and SW winds at 5-10mph. Christmas Eve looks partly clear (some cloudiness) with temps in the upper 40s and NW winds at 10-20mph.  Wednesday night... cloudy with 20% chance of rain and temps in the upper 30s.  For Christmas Day... mostly cloudy with peeks of sun, temps in the upper 40s and S-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Christmas Night... cloudy, temps in the low-40s and Southerly breezes at 5-10mph.
This winter season according to the Weather Folk, looks to have this "Stratospheric" Polar Vortex (a massive area of cold that circles the Earth's poles acting like a wall keeping frigid air) contained yet strengthening as January is likely to be a continuation of the end-of-December weather pattern with above-average temperatures across much of the southern two-thirds of the country.  February could feature not as frigid weather along the East Coast with extended rounds of cold air being less likely.  The first three months of the year is forecasted to be slightly warmer than last year.  Wetter-than-average conditions are likely across the northern U.S., while drier-than-average conditions are more likely across the southern U.S.  Here's hoping Winter will be kind to all of us!  Until September 22nd, 2026, we'll see you next year Autumn!

New Moon Friday

Mornin'!  It's 53° in Wildwood NJ.  And, boy is it wild this morning.  It's raining with winds out of the S-SE at 25-35mph +gusting big time.  Those winds are relentless, thunderous and roaring.  Rain is heavy at the moment as it's coming down sideways.  If there was any morning to roll over (with a pillow over your head), it's today.  Expect these conditions to continue as we'll have very windy conditions (W-SW at 25-35mph + gusting over 50mph), and rain throughout the rest of the morning (100% chance).  This morning's high of 53° will fall to near 40° this afternoon as some breaks in the clouds could be happening just after mid-day.  By early evening, chance of rain is only 20% but the winds aren't going anywhere until the overnight.  Tonight... partly cloudy, wind diminishing overnight, temps dropping to the upper 20s with W-NW winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... sunny along with a few clouds, temps just tapping 40° with West winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... mostly clear, temps in the upper 30s and S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Sunday... a mix of sun and clouds, temps in the upper 40s and West winds at 10-20mph.  Sunday night... clear, temps in the upper 20s with N-NW winds at 10-20mph.  It's the New Moon today and there's already some street flooding happening this morning. Know your low-lying areas. Be aware of high tide times and extra high coastal flooding due to the moon's pull and rainfall. And, remember... the back bay / marsh side of the island has their high tides an hour later than the ocean's side. Don't drive through flood waters.

Lovely Day - Not So Much Tonight

My Christmas Tree
Mornin'! It's 33° in Wildwood NJ.  It's clear and starlit with barely a breeze (E-NE at 2-4mph).  For some reason when we're under thick cloud cover, I can hear the sounds of the waves crashing the shore loud and clear but this morning without a cloud in the sky... I'm getting the sounds of waves crashing, roaring and blaring when stepping outside into the early morning silence. It almost sounds like a highway full of rushing traffic just a couple blocks away. The ocean's at least 8+ blocks away (that's including the extra wide beach we have here).  Ms Sun's due up in just over a half an hour.  We'll have sunny skies this morning leading into this afternoon when clouds begin to filter in as the temps rise into the low-50s.  Winds will be out of the E-SE at 10-15mph.  Tonight... 90% chance of rain early becoming windy with periods of rain throughout the night.  By the way, tomorrow is the New Moon which will create higher than normal tides which could affect tonight's tides and bring possible coastal flooding to our low-lying areas.  Be aware of where you're driving or parking your vehicle on the island. Temps will drop into the mid-upper 40s.  Those S-SE winds will be providing the show as we're back to very gusty conditions with 25-35mph +gusting up to 40mph.  Tomorrow... tumultuous with W-SW winds being the show-stopper at 25-35mph +gusting over 50mph, 80% chance of rain early and clearing by the afternoon. As winds push through, temps will be in the mid-50s becoming around 40° by later in the afternoon and the 30s by evening. Tomorrow night... clear, windy and cold. Temps will be in the upper 20s with W-NW winds at 25-35mph +gusting.  Saturday.... mostly sunny, temps in the upper 30s and W-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Sunday... partly sunny, temps in the upper 40s and West winds at 15-25mph +gusting.  It's a good time to secure those outdoor decorations!

Washington Street Mall - Cape May NJ

Mornin'!  It's 39° in Wildwood NJ.  It's feeling like 32° due to those light seabreezes out of the West at 10-15mph.  There's a string of clouds over the ocean's horizon line waiting for Ms Sun.  Just a few more days of Autumn and it'll be Winter (the Solstice which is the shortest day of the year is this coming Sunday).  Expect a warmer day than we've been having as of late as temps may tap 50° today.  We'll have a mix of sun and clouds with winds out of the SW at 10-20mph.  Tonight... partly clear / partly cloudy with temps in the mid-30s and North winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... another warmish day with temps in the low-50s and Winds out of the SE at 10-15mph. It'll be sunny to start as clouds will filter in throughout the day.  Tomorrow night... cloudy with periods of rain overnight becoming windy.  Temps will be in the upper 40s and Winds will be out of the S-SE at 25-35mph.  Chance of rain is 100%.  Friday... cloudy and windy with rain in the morning (75% chance) becoming a cloudy day, temps in the upper 50s falling into the low-mid 40s and W-SW winds at 25-35mph +gusting.  Sounds like a perfect day to bake those cookies or make a big ol' pot of homemade soup!  Friday night... partly cloudy, temps around 30° with W-NW winds at 25-35mph diminishing around midnight.  As for this coming weekend... Saturday will be partly sunny with temps around 40° and West winds at 10-20mph.  Sunday... intervals of sun and clouds, temps near 50° and West winds at 15-25mph.

Last Week Of Autumn

Mornin'!  It's 21° in Wildwood NJ.  Add to that the NW winds at 15-20mph +gusting and you've got 7° out there.  It's clear and starlit as Ms Sun's coming over the horizon in just about an hour.  Hopefully, her rays will thaw us out a bit this last Monday of the season.  We've stiffen up a bit since that Clipper passed through yesterday morning laying a nice thick coating of a heavy, wet wintry mix.  What didn't melt, turned to a meaty, crunchy layer on everything.  If you didn't get out and clean off the sidewalk or your vehicle, good luck with that.  The real thaw doesn't come until Wednesday.  It'll be mostly sunny start today and this last week of Autumn.  Clouds will begin filtering in this afternoon as temps hover around 30° but will feel like the mid-teens with those NW winds at 15-25mph +gusting.  Tonight... cloudy skies will become partly cloudy after midnight, temps in the upper 20s and W-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... plentiful sunshine, temps in the upper 30s and West winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow night... clear, temps in the mid-30s with S-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Wednesday... partly cloudy day with temps in the upper 40s with SW winds at 10-20mph.  Wednesday night... partly clear, temps in the upper 30s and North winds at 5-10mph.

Happy Hanukkah!

Wildwood Crest - Sunset Lake
Mornin'!  Happy Hanukkah! It's 36° in Wildwood NJ.  A mixture of rain and snow has just started coming down.  Winds are out of the N-NW at 10-20mph.  It's wet and glistening outside in the darkness (daybreak's about a ½ hr away) but not white yet although I was supposed to be waking to a blanket of snow this morning.  The weather folk were saying that 1-3" were to be expected along the coast most of which should have started late last night.  I'm not so sure now about this Clipper unless this mix of freezing stuff turns to big, heavy snow and begins coming down more intensely than it is.
FootNote: This wintry mix (whatever you want to call it), will give way to cloudy skies with some clearing by this afternoon.  My daughter lives in a suburb of Philly and received 6" of snow.  And, my son lives in Philly and got 3" of the white stuff.  Not much to report from the Wildwoods.  Mostly a slushy, heavy, ½+inches of the wintry mix.  Some of the trees, bushes and sidewalks have a nice ½-1" coating.  I'm seeing lots of ice-cycles hanging all around outside.  It's cold today.  As raw as you can get.
Temps will be in the low-mid 30s with very windy conditions (NW winds at 25-35mph +gusting) engulfing us beginning late this afternoon into the evening making it feel like the teens.  Late tonight into the overnight... partly cloudy and still extremely windy with temps around 20° and NW winds at 25-35mph +gusting making it feel like it's in the single digits (5°).  Tomorrow... thankfully sunny, along with a few clouds, temps in the low-30s and W-NW winds at 15-25mph +gusting.  Tomorrow night... partly cloudy, temps in the upper 20s and W-SW winds at 10-15mph. One week until the first day of Winter.

Ms Alberta Clipper Is Heading In Our Direction

Mornin'!  It's 32° in Wildwood NJ.  It's feeling like 27° with the S-SW breezes at 5-10mph.  It's partly cloudy.  It'll be an overcast day with peeks of sun, temps in the mid-upper 40s and SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tonight... cloudy with periods of snowfall (after midnight), temps in the low-30s and SW winds shifting from the N-NW at 10-15mph. Chance of snowfall is 100% and about an inch of snow is expected.  An "Alberta Clipper" is bringing snow from the northern tier into the Midwest and Northeast this weekend.  Major cities along the Interstate and I95 corridor like New York City and Philadelphia could see their first measurable snow of the season (1-3 inches is possible with totals of up to 8" is possible in some of the locations).  Tomorrow... waking to snowfall ending late morning then giving way to clearing in the afternoon with perhaps peeks of sun.  Temps will be in the low-30s with NW winds at 20-30mph +gusting.  Tomorrow night... mostly clear with gusty winds out of the NW at 20-30mph +gusting.  Temps will be around 20° feeling more like the single digits (8°)!  Monday... intervals of sun and clouds, temps in the low-30s and W-NW winds at 15-25mph +gusting.

Pearl Harbor's Remembrance Day

Current Situation via NorthWWs Webcam

Mornin'!  It's 32° in Wildwood NJ.  It feels like 29°.  Ms Sun's up and working her way through some wispy cloud cover.  Winds are very light out of the N-NW at 3-5mph. There's a layer of sparkling frost on all the surfaces outside and almost looks like snow.  It's going to be one of those partly clear / partly cloudy kind of days with temps in the mid-40s and W-NW winds at 5-10mph.  Tonight... mostly clear, temps in the low-30s and NW winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... gusty with mostly gray with overcast skies, temps in the mid-30s and N-NE winds at 15-25mph +gusting.  Tomorrow night... cloudy start to the evening, followed by clear skies, temps in the low-20s and N-NE winds at 10-20mph making it feel like 15°.  That's no typo.  It's December 7th today... a "Day that will live in infamy" and its done just that.  For those of you who don't know this infamous day... it's the day the United States had a surprise aerial attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. 2,403 servicemen were killed. The day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered a speech urging Congress for a formal declaration of war against Japan.  War was then declared an hour later bringing the US into the Second World War unifying the country behind the war effort.

It's the Weekend

Cape May - Rotary Park on Lafayette Street

Mornin'!  It's 37° in Wildwood NJ.  It's still dark and cloudy.  There's a light breeze out of the N-NW at 5-7mph and it's making it feel cooler at 33°.  The cloud cover is insulating the island and making the outside sounds more prevalent.  For a second, I thought there was a big pickup truck idling in front of my house and when I opened the door, there's not one vehicle on my street.  What I was hearing was the ocean's roar.  And, I live 6+ blocks away from the beach.  Add to that, the famously wide beach here.  Believe it or not, some parts of the beach near me are 500 yards wide.  Anyway, waking to the roar of the ocean never gets old although it caught me off-guard.  As for weather, we had our first snowfall of the season yesterday.  A heavy, thick, wet snow blanketed the island in the morning and gave us around an inch of a coating of the white stuff (mostly on lawns, trees, vehicles but none on road/street surfaces).  It disappeared quickly as a light rain followed along with not-so-freezing temps which cleaned things up.  Oh... the creamy Potato-Leek soup was a perfect accompaniment to the weather and was delicious!
So, for today...it'll be cloudy, with temps in the low-40s and NW winds at 5-10mph.  Tonight... partly cloudy, temps in the low-30s and NW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... overcast with temps in the low-40s and W-NW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow night... mostly clear, with some clouds from time to time, temps in the low-30s and W-NW winds at 10-20mph.

Rainy Day Ahead

Otten's Harbor Webcam - Wildwood NJ

Mornin'!  Happy Birthday to my son today.  This one's for you!  It's 47° in Wildwood NJ  We're under partly cloudy / partly clear skies with breezes out of the S-SE at 5-10mph.  We're expecting rain to begin in a couple of hours as it's going to be a wet and windy day today.  There's 100% chance of rain today, temps in the low-50s and SE winds shifting to the North at 10-20mph +gusting.  One to two inches of rain are expected.  Note that the heavy rainfall that's possible as well as Thursday's Full Moon could have a serious effect on the chance of coastal flooding.  Know your high tide times and low-lying areas on the island and surrounding areas.  By the way, today's rainfall should conclude sometime around 7-8pm. Tonight... mostly cloudy with clearing overnight, temps in the low-30s and NW winds at 15-25mph +gusting.  Tomorrow... a nice one with sunny skies, temps in the low-40s and NW winds at 10-15mph. December's Here!

Otten's Harbor Webcam This Morning

Mornin'!  Happy December! For all you December babies... this is your month - Happy Birthday!  It's 37° in Wildwood NJ.  It's feeling like 30° with those N-NW winds at 10-20mph.  Ms Sun's up and shining her bright yellow light over the island. It'll be a sunny first day of December.  Temps will rise into the mid-40s with North winds ramping up even more.  Tonight... partly clear giving way to cloudy skies late into the evening as temps drop back to the mid-upper 30s.  Winds will be much calmer out of the E-SE at 5-10mph.  There's a 25% chance of rain showers overnight.  Tomorrow... temps in the low-50s and East winds shifting from the N-NW at 10-20mph and periods of rain (100% chance). Local heavy rainfall possible with 1-2" of rain.  We might even see tidal flooding due to this week's upcoming Full Moon on Thursday.  The moon is already making our tides look a bit more swollen than normal. You know the drill... be cognizant of where the island floods and high tide times and where you park your vehicle. Don't drive through flood waters.  Okay December... you've already fired up a winter storm headed in this direction.  I'd like to say "Welcome December" but December, January and February are on my list of the "Dreaded Winter Weather" months.  Winter storm "Bellamy" (by the way, Winter's still 20 days away) is now in the Midwest and has potential to be a storm with snow accumulation and ice.  In general, the Northeast, The I95 corridor and up the Hudson Valley from New York City into parts of New England tomorrow could all be in the path of Bellamy.  As for our coast... for now it appears just a rain event. And, like I said... a potential for local heavy rainfall.  You've been notified.
