Ms Sun's Checking In Today!

Mornin'!  It's 61° in Wildwood NJ.  No rain; just mostly clouds.  Ms Sun's up there as she has risen and doing her best to break on through any cloud openings she can find.  It's a rather lovely autumn morning this humpday.  No major winds like the last 5 days.  Winds are currently out of the NE at 15-20mph.  But, it looks like we're definintely going to see Ms Sun today!!!  Expect mostly cloudy conditions early with more sunshine than clouds by late morning / early afternoon.  Temps will be in the upper 60s with NE winds at 15-25mph.  Tonight... back to being mostly cloudy, 20% chance of a rain shower, temps in the low-60s and NE winds at 15-25mph.  Tomorrow... 50% chance of rain showers (beginning late morning) temps in the upper 60s, with (you guessed it) increasing blustery winds out of the NE at 20-30mph. Friday... rain, temps tapping 70° with those pesky NE winds.  As for this weekend... waking to rain (50% chance) on Saturday, with peeks of sun by early afternoon, temps in the upper 60s and NE winds at 15-20mph.  Sunday... (I can't believe I'm typing this) SUNNY with temps tapping 70°!  We had some heavy tidal flooding last night without it raining.  Just back-bay seeping tides that covered all the streets. The sirens were wailing as water came right up to the curbs and driveways.  These windy weather conditions along with the storm now off ( and far below) our coast, it still is affecting the tides along with the Full Moon that is coming on Friday.  Know your low-lying and flood prone areas on the island!

More Crappy Weather Today

Mornin'!  It's 61° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 92% with a 60° dewpoint.  It's gray and cloudy but not raining at the moment.  Winds are battering the coast again since last night out of the NE at 25-35mph +gusting.  We're just had high tide on the ocean side of the island as high tides are now shifting towards the back of the island on the marsh/bay side.  There's no street flooding that I can see but the webcams are showing that the beaches are still under water right up to the dunes. Expect another gray day with 50% chance of rain showers becoming less by the afternoon.  Temps will be in the mid-60s.  NE winds have no intentions of checking out with their 25-35mph sustained gusts.  Tonight... still cloudy and windy with temps down to where they are now... low 60s and NE winds at 20-30mph.  Tomorrow... more of the same.  It'll be cloudy and windy with temps in the mid-60s and NE winds at 20-30mph.  Thursday... rain with those NE winds still checked in.  Friday... rain and not quite as windy.  And, Friday is the full moon so you know the drill... those high tides are going to be extreme. Saturday... rainy and windy.  I'll say, this crapola weather wears on you.  September's been really ugly this year as there hasn't been much sparkle in this so-called "jewel".

Gray Monday

Today's WebCam Shot - North WW

Mornin'!  It's 66° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 96% with a dewpoint of 66°. We couldn't get any more damp outside as everything's still saturated from this weekend's visit from Ophelia.  Winds are currently out of the N-NW at 5-7mph and will be kicking up again tonight.  It's gray and ominous out there with dark rain clouds all around us.  It'll be another cloudy day again today with showers this afternoon.  Temps will be just tapping 70° with N-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... cloudy with rain showers and temps in the low 60s.  Winds will kick up again out of the NE at 20-30mph.  Tomorrow... windy with rain showers, temps in the mid-60s and NE winds rip-roaring at 25-35mph +gusting.  Wednesday mostly cloudy with possible random peeks of sun (remember Ms Sun?) if we're lucky some time in the afternoon.  Thursday, Friday, and Saturday... rainy days.  I'll never get used to gloomy, day after day, wet, rainy days like these. Some parts of our country like the Pacific NW where my sister lives has wet, gloomy days more often than not.  You have to be of a certain character to live in a mostly gray, wet climate.  It's not for me.  I need more sunshine than rain in my day. There's nothing like a full week of sunshine!  I looked up some of our country's wettest places:
Hilo, Hawaii
Sitka, Alaska
Sequim, Washington
West Palm Beach, Florida
Seaside, Oregon

Crapola Week Up Ahead

Mornin'!  It's 70° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 96% with a dewpoint of 70°.  Along with the humidity, it's cloudy with winds out of the SE at 10-15mph.  We're drenched and quiet as the blustery winds have subsided and the flood waters have receded.  I doubt if we'll be drying up any time soon with what Ophelia did to the island.  We had some good ol' tropical rainfall, tidal flooding and beach erosion. I've got a lot of clean up from all the pruning of the trees with branches and leaves she provided.  No damage that I've noticed other than debris all over.  The windows look grimy outside.  The ocean's roar is loud and clear from 6+ blocks away.  The birds are quiet for some reason.  I'm assuming that we're out of the stormy mess for now.  It'll be an overcast day with possible peeks of sun by sunset.  Temps will be in the low-mid 70s with South winds at 10-20mph.  Tonight... mostly cloudy with a 25% chance of rain showers, temps in the mid-60s and SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... overcast with rain showers (50% chance) and temps around 70°.  N-NW winds are on tap at 15-25mph.  Tuesday... cloudy and windy (NE 25-35mph) and 40% chance of rain.  In fact, there's a chance it could rain every day next week!  I'll keep you posted.

Welcome Autumn

Mornin'!  Welcome Autumn!  She's coming in with a bang!  It's also my daughter's birthday and a very happy birthday to you!  This one's for you!  It's 65° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 95% with a dewpoint of 54°.  It's raining sideways.  Winds are out of the East at 30-35mph +gusting.  This miserable storm began causing havoc last night around bedtime and has been at it ever since.  We haven't had flooding yet but the relentless winds won't allow the focus on anything else.  My trees are still standing thankfully.  We should see the rain take a reprieve by late Monday with Ms Sun shining on Wednesday.  The winds should be simmering down by tomorrow thankfully.  For Today... expect rain and winds with temps around 70° and E-NE winds at 25-40mph +occasional gusting.  Chance of rain is 100%.  Tonight... rain with temps in the upper 60s and E-NE winds at 25-35mph +gusting.  Tomorrow...  steady rain becoming showers in the afternoon, temps in the low-70s with S-SE winds at 10-20mph.

It's The Last Day Of Summer and Ophelia's Checking In This Weekend

Mornin'!  It's 67° in Wildwood NJ.  Ms Sun's up but underneath some cloud cover.  She's trying to peek through but there's not many openings.  We'll definitely see peeks of her though.  Humidity's down at 65% with a dewpoint of 57°.  The winds are the main character this morning... E-NE at 20-25mph +gusting.  And, this storm off our coast is still fast approaching.  For today, it'll be cloudy and windy with 25% chance of rain showers (mostly this evening).  Temps will be around 70° with those E-NE (Nor'easter) winds at 25-35mph +gusting.  Tonight... cloudy and windy with 100% chance of rain which looks like it could start around 8-9pm.  Temps will drop back into the mid-60s with E-NE winds at 25-40mph +gusting (to occasionally 50mph).  Strap in!  Tomorrow... major winds (NE at 25-40mph +gusting), a steady rain, maybe even thunder, and temps around 70°.  The rainfall with this storm could last until Sunday (late morning).  Remember... the island can only take on so much rain and ocean surge.  This weekend will be majorly impacted by "Potential Tropical Cyclone 16" which looks like it'll be called Ophelia by the NHC (National Hurricane Center).  It has posted these warnings:
~Coastal Flood Warning
~High Surf Warning
~Hazardous Weather Warning
~Rip Current Statement
~High Wind Warning
Basically, this strong Coastal storm will cause significant coastal flood, strong winds and heavy rainfall this weekend.
High Tide: 2:01PM
Low Tide: 8:38PM
Ocean Temp: 73°
Sunrise: 6:47AM
Sunset: 6:56PM
UV Index: 3.3
Rip currents: High Risk (don't go into the ocean)
It's a big weekend here in Wildwood.  And, it's already begun.  It's the Fall Irish Fest and the Classic Car Festival (many of which are already parked all around the island). Some things to keep in mind... be aware of low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.  Know your higher areas on the island for parking and driving.  We are going to see lots of flooding on the island this weekend from the tropical steady rains as well as tides as well as storm surge. If driving through flood waters you could have undercarriage saltwater damage.  Also, drive slowly through the flooded streets creating "no wake" as most vehicles barrel through creating big wakes that drive the water onto and into properties and businesses.  Also, hunker down... remove deck furniture, umbrellas, plants, trashcans etc to more secure areas on your property.  The high tides on the ocean side of the island are an hour prior to the marsh/bay side of the island.  This all begins tonight so you've been warned.  Speaking of tonight... Summer ends tonight.  It's going to be Autumn tomorrow. Until next year... See ya on the other side Summer!

Lovely Thursday

Mornin'!  It's 61° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 81% with a dewpoint of 56°.  Ms Sun's up and shining through the blue, cloud-free sky. Breezes are out of the N-NE at 5-7mph.  It'll be sunny this morning as clouds increase this afternoon.  Temps will get into the mid-70s again with E-NE breezes at 5-10mph.  Tonight... mostly cloudy, temps back down to where they are now... low-60s with E-NE winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... mostly cloudy, temps in the low-mid 70s with stiff breezes out of the East at 10-20mph with rain beginning in the overnight into Saturday.  No matter what the meteorologists call this tropical development heading in our direction, this coastal low will be bringing gusty winds and battering surf that will probably result in coastal flooding and major beach erosion this upcoming weekend.  This area of low pressure off our coast has been designated with a chance for tropical development over the next few days here.  I'll be keeping a close watch.  Two days until Autumn.

Last (Lovely) Hump Day Of Summer

Mornin'!  It's 62° in Wildwood NJ.  Ms Sun's up and breezes are barely there out of the N-NW at 2-3mph.  Humidity's low at 77% with a dewpoint of 54°.  It's another lovely day this summer morn.  Only 3 more days until Summer checks out.  It'll be lovely too with sunny clear blue skies, temps in the mid-70s and NW breezes at 5-10mph.  Tonight... clear skies, temps around 60° with light and variable winds.  Tomorrow... a mix of sun and clouds, temps in the low-mid 70s and E-NE winds at 5-10mph.  Friday... not so lovely.  In fact, there's a "sub-tropical" storm going to affect our region by this weekend.  These storms produce soaking rain, strong winds and very rough, high surf.  On Friday, we'll have the beginning of this storm but it'll be mostly cloudy with very windy conditions with temps around 70°.  Rain could be falling by Friday evening.  Saturday... rainy (this storm has the potential for very heavy tropical rains) as well as extremely windy conditions.  Temps will be around 70°.  Sunday... rain until noon with winds not quite as gusty as Friday and Saturday and temps in the low-70s.  This is one of the last "big" weekends here in Wildwood as the Irish Festival and Classic Car Festival is due up and it's looking like rain gear should get packed if coming.  Anything can change though and I'm here to keep you in the loop!  Enjoy today!

Partly Sunny Sunday

This Morning's Webcam Shot - North WW
Mornin'!  It's 61° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 82% with a dewpoint of 55°.  It's clear as Ms Sun just rose over the horizon.  Winds are barely there out of the E-SE at 2-3mph.  The island birds are making their presence known this lovely morning. My daughter hooked me up with a new App for my phone and it's a bird identifier.  First thing I did when stepping out onto the back porch was have the phone ready and App turned on and these birds were recorded all at the same time... European Starling, Laughing Gull, Blue Jay, Herring Gull, White-throated Sparrow and a House Sparrow.  Just amazing.
It'll be a sunny start to the day with clouds filtering in this morning.  It'll become cloudy this afternoon as temps get up near 80°.  Winds will be out of the S-SE at 15-25mph.  Tonight... 85% chance of rain showers becoming a steady rain overnight.  Temps will drop into the mid-60s with S-SW at 10-20mph.  Chance of rain on the overnight... 90%.  Tomorrow... rain in the morning (70% chance) with breaks of sun by afternoon, temps in the mid-70s and N-NW winds at 10-15ph.

A Sneak Preview Of Autumn - Shana Tova!

This Morning's Webcam Shot
Mornin'!  It's 57° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 74% with a dewpoint of 52°.  Winds are out of the North at 15-20mph.  And, Ms Sun's up and shining through some clouds along the ocean's horizon.  If today doesn't feel like an chilly, autumn morning then I don't know what does.  Summer's in our wake this morning.  It'll be a lovely day today with plentiful sunshine, temps in the upper 70s and North winds at 10-20mph.  Tonight... clear, temps around where they are now with N-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... mainly sunny, temps around 80° with NW winds at 10-20mph.  Sunday... sunny, temps in the upper 70s with SE winds at 10-20mph.  The tides are higher than normal and stronger with high risk rip currents.  Be aware of warnings and posting for the island.  It would be smart not to go into the ocean as the we could see big waves (6-8') and dangerous rip currents.  There are no lifeguards posted today.  But it's a perfect day to just sit on the beach and watch the world go by.  Just about another week for the first day of Autumn.  Happy Friday and Happy New Year "Rosh Hashanah" to our Jewish peeps!

A Beauty Up Ahead

This Morning's Webcam Shot - North WW
Mornin'!  It's 68° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 79% with a dewpoint of 61°.  Winds are out of the North at 8-11mph.  Ms Sun has begun to rise in the beautiful morning sky.  It's refreshing outside this morning.  The seagulls are up and laughing, the breeze is cool, the heaviness in the not-so-humid air is gone.  It's looking like a lovely day up ahead.  Expect and mix of sun and clouds today with temps around 80° and N-NE winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... clear, temps in the upper 50s (not a typo) and winds still out of the North at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... mainly sunny, temps in the upper 70s and N-NE winds at 10-20mph.  As for the weekend... both days mostly sunny, temps in the mid-upper 70s and breezy.  Today's the New Moon.  New Moons and Full Moons mean much higher and lower tides than we usually have.  We also are having some serious rip currents for the next few days due to Hurricane Lee still out in the Atlantic heading towards New England.  With the New Moon and Hurricane Lee, higher tides and rip currents will certainly be an issue.  We could see beach erosion and minor street flooding.  Be aware of the high-tide times and low-lying areas on the island and remember that high tide is always an hour later on the backside (the marsh and bay side) of the island.  Also, don't drive through salty tide water as it's hazardous to the underside of your vehicle.  The Surf will be in the dangerous zone as swimming or surfing will be a challenge even for the best swimmers.  Be extremely careful if entering the ocean and check with lifeguards before doing so.

Hump Day

Mornin'!  It's 71° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 96% with a dewpoint of 72°.  We're saturated as thunder and lightning began around 4am and watered us very well with those heavy downpours.  At the moment... no rainfall.  Winds are out of the East at 5-10mph.  Expect a mostly cloudy morning with 20% chance of rain showers before mid-day.  Temps will be in the low-80s as Ms Sun tries to shine as it'll become partly sunny later today.  Winds will be out of the W-NW at 10-15mph.  Tonight... partly cloudy, temps in the mid-upper 60 and N-NW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... sunny, temps around 80° with N-NE winds at 10-15mph.  As for this weekend... a nice one as both Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny, temps around 80°.  Saturday will be blustery as we feel the effects of Hurricane Lee.  Who knows if it'll be windy on Sunday too... to be determined.  The New Moon is tomorrow as our tides which will be much higher than normal no doubt creating beach erosion and perhaps even some tidal flooding.

Not So Sunny Sunday

Mornin'!  It's 75° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 93% with a dewpoint of 73°.  Winds are out of the S-SE at 4-6mph.  It's raining lightly with Ms Sun (almost fully) trying to shine through the  partly cloud covered sky.  We had a sunrise orange glow in the sky happening again.  These apocalyptic mornings are on the weird side for sure.  There's a rain / thunderstorm system heading right for us according to the radar/doppler right now so I wouldn't be surprised if this orange glow dissipates as the skies turn completely dark gray.  Expect the rain to continue off and on this morning with occasional showers this afternoon.  We could see heavy or torrential downpours at times but we probably will see peeks of sunshine too.  You know that crazy Cape May County bubble we're in. Temps will be around 80° with S-SE winds at 5-10mph.  Chance of rain today... 90%.  Tonight... overcast with 40% chance of rain showers, temps down into the low-70s as winds will be light and variable.  Tomorrow... partly sunny, temps in the low-80s and West winds at 5-10mph.  There's a 25% chance of a stray shower or thunderstorm as well.

Happy Friday!

This Morning's webcam shot - NWW boat ramp
Mornin'!  It's 77° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 90% with a dewpoint of 74°.  Winds are out of the W-SW at 5-7mph.  I woke to thunder this morning.  Thinking the bikes are still outside in the backyard, I rushed to put the ol' flipflops on and rush to put them away when my hubby beat me to it.  Then, I realized there was an orange glow in the house windows when he said, "did you notice the orange glow?"  I stepped outside and it looked like the apocalypse out there.  Ms Sun was trying to rise and shine at the exact same time that storm clouds surrounded us.  It was the strangest sky I've ever seen.  It was storming all around us... over the ocean, to the North, to the South and to the West on the mainland but not on Wildwood!
Right now... it's sunny and bright and just being a warm summer morning.  It's very still (S-SW winds at 5-7mph) and sticky out there.  We're going to have a mix of clouds and sunshine today with temps in the mid-upper 80s and Southerly breezes at 10-15mph.  There's a slight chance of a shower this afternoon (20% chance). Tonight... cloudy, 30% chance of a stray shower, temps in the low-mid 70s with Southerly breezes sticking around at 10-15mph.  I made it to the beach yesterday and with those Southerly breezes... not one fly and a very pleasant and enjoyable beach day.  I'm guessing today will be the same but keep your eye on the sky for that possible shower and/or thunderstorm.  For the weekend... partly to mostly sunny tomorrow... temps in the mid-80s and Southerly breezes at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow night... 30% chance of rain.  Sunday...  40% chance of rain in the morning and a partly sunny Sunday due up.  Temps will be in the mid-80s with Southerly breezes at 5-10mph.

Heat Wave Continues

Mornin'!  It's 77° in Wildwood NJ.  Ms Sun's up and shining through the thick morning haze.  Humidity's 96% with a dewpoint of 73°.  It's still as winds are barely there out of the SW at 1-3mph.  It's a heavy, moist morning out there and there's not one thing refreshing about it.  We're in a soupy heatwave this week and it'll continue into today again.  Unfortunately no beach this week so far due to the extremely hot westerly land breezes and biting flies which take full advantage of that breeze direction to fly to the beaches for their meals.  I can personally vouch for that as I tried to enjoy the beach a couple of days ago to no avail.  I lasted barely a half an hour.  And, everyone seems to be posting the intense inundation of "flies" here on social media.  Today could be where it all changes as the wind direction will be coming from the South (not the West) today and tonight. Expect a mostly sunny (some clouds in the mix) day with temps near 90° again.  It got up to 93° with intense humidity yesterday.  Winds will be 10-15mph out of the South.  Tonight... partly clear, temps in the mid-70s and South winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... mix of sun and clouds, temps much cooler... low-80s and South winds at 10-20mph.  For the weekend... Saturday's looking partly cloudy after a mostly sunny morning, temps in the low-80s and S-SW winds.  Sunday...  could have rain kicking off the day at least until the early afternoon when it looks like a cloudy day, temps in the low-80s and S-SW, South, S-SE winds.  We're all watching Hurricane Lee which is currently centered 900 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and is tracking W-NW feeding on all the warm water.  Today's satellite observations showed that its in the beginning stages of intensification and the NE Coast should be monitoring it.

Happy "Warm" Hump Day!

Not My Picture But Not An Exaggeration
Mornin'!  It's 75° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 94% with a dewpoint of 73°.  Breezes (if you want to call them that) are out of the NW at 2-3mph.  Ms Sun's up and shining through that humid haze this morning.  We're going to see an abundance of sunshine today with temps near 90° and winds out of the West at 5-10mph.  Tonight... clear with some clouds in the mix.  Temps back to where they are now (mid-70s) and SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... partly cloudy, temps in the mid-80s and South winds at 10-20mph.
I decided to take in a beach day yesterday even with the wind direction (Northwest).  I packed my lunch, book and all I needed for a quiet, somewhat uninhabited beach day yesterday and was swarmed by the biting flies.  With no exaggeration, they were the worst I've ever seen and within less than a half hour, was home. It was so bad that I never once thought to take a photo of what occurred.  West winds are back today and I'm sure the flies are too. The insect repellent worked but the flies somehow found spots on my body that I missed and feasted away.  There were hundreds (if not more) on my clothing, my chair, beach bag and on my umbrella as well.  Just a heads up if you decide to hit the beach today... you've been forewarned.  And, by the way it was on the Crest beach.

Hazy and Cloudy Tuesday

Rip Current

Mornin'!  It's 77° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 84% with a 72° dewpoint.  Ms Sun is shining through the hazy (somewhat cloudy) sky.  Winds are out of the N-NW at 4-6mph.  We'll be having this hazy sunshine this morning as cloud increase today becoming mostly cloudy today.  Temps will be in the mid-80s with East winds eventually becoming Southerly at 5-10mph.  Tonight... mostly cloudy early in the evening becoming clear overnight.  Temps will be in the low-70s with West winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... sunny and hot with temps near 90° and West winds at 5-10mph.  Keep that insect repellent handy.
Oh... let's talk rip currents as they are especially dangerous and creating alot of news as of late.  Three people have died over this holiday weekend in various towns along our eastern coasts due to the rip currents.  Last night's news reported many (dangerous and scary) rescues all along our coasts (at least 10 rescues from North Jersey, 13 just in Ocean City continuing all the way down to Sea Isle) happened while the beaches were crowded and being guarded.  Many of our beaches are not being guarded now as it's considered "off season".  Swim only on guarded beaches and be extremely careful if swimming.  Don't swim against the current that's pulling you out to sea.  If you wait (as calmly as possible) until it releases its grip and then swim out of its grasp in the direction parallel to the shoreline, you can then gain control again and begin swimming or floating with a wave back to shore.

Happy Labor Day!

Mornin'! Happy Labor Day!  It's 76° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 77% with a dewpoint of 71°.  Ms Sun is shining through the hazy sky and winds are out of the W-NW at 8-10mph.  It's truly hard to believe that it's Labor Day.  I swear, the older you get the faster time flies on by; especially the summer season.  But, it's definitely feeling like a summer morning today.  It's warm out there and it's still fairly early.  Before sitting here blogging, I had to do water the gardens since we haven't had rain in quite awhile (almost a week ago).  I also wanted to cut up the last watermelon of the summer as well as shuck the corn for dinner today and get that into the trash as it's trash day.  And, by the way... there's plenty of parking available on my street this morning as there hasn't been one spot available since Thursday night.  The visitors have all gone and turned their backs on the Jewel.
As for the weather today... mix of clouds and sunshine, temps in the upper 80s and W-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... clear, temps in the low-70s and West winds at 10-15mph (pack the insect repellent).  Tomorrow... intervals and clouds and sun with temps in the mid-upper 80s and E-NE winds at 5-10mph.  Wednesday... sunny, temps in the mid-80s and West winds at 5-10mph.  Good for you if you scheduled your vacation this week!

The Jewel Has Checked In

An Aerial Shot of North Wildwood
Mornin'!  It's 62° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 72% with a dewpoint of 55°.  Winds are out of the NE at 10-15mph.  And, Ms Sun's shining through the clear, blue, cloudless sky.  Happy September!  It's my favorite of all the months of the year.  The weather's got Autumn written all over it even though it's 3 weeks away.  Enjoy this nice stretch of sparkling, jewel-like weather for the next 5 days!  If you picked this upcoming long weekend or coming week for your vacation, you hit the jackpot.
For today... clear skies, low humidity, sunny with temps in the upper 70s and NE winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... clear and back to the low-60s.  Tomorrow... a repeat of today.  Sunday... sunny with a high near 83°.  Monday... clear and sunny with temps near 90°.  Tuesday... clear and sunny with temps near 90°.  Wednesday... clear and sunny with temps in the mid-80s.  Shall I continue?  Looks like Thursday and Friday are the same.  For now anyway. I'm not a fan of going too far out on the weather forecasts.  But, this long, holiday weekend is 5-Star and kicking off the next season with just how it should be... perfection!  The "Jewel" is here!

Super Moon Humpday

Mornin'!  It's 75° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 95% with a 74° dewpoint.  Breezes are barely there out of the SW at 3-5mph.  It's muggy and cloudy as Ms Sun doesn't have a chance at the moment to shine with this thick cloud cover.  My first thoughts when I woke, was Idalia pummeling the gulf coast of Florida.  Then, when I stepped out onto my back porch, not a leaf on my tree or shrubs were moving as it's as still as can be this morning.  It's amazing that one part of the country is being destroyed by a Category 3 hurricane as I'm surrounded by stillness and silence.  It's very emotional for me.  Just this past May, I vacationed in Clearwater Florida for the very first time as I now know the area that's being paralyzed.  I can't express what I'm feeling but the last thing you want is Jim Cantore in your town.
For Wildwood today, expect scattered showers today mostly before noon (25% chance).  We should see peeks of sunshine this afternoon with temps heading into the mid-80s and SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tonight... mostly cloudy, temps in the mid-upper 60s and N-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... mostly cloudy, temps in the low-70s and stiff winds out of the NE.  The holiday weekend beginning Friday into Monday is looking A-OK with plenty of sunshine and temps in the mid-70s and low-80s all four days.  It's the Full Moon (Super Moon) today and our tides are more extremely higher and lower than normal.  In fact, there are a couple Advisories posted...  "Coastal Flood Advisory" and "High Rip Current Risk" are in effect today until 1AM Thursday.  Remember your "high tide" times when traversing or parking around or on or off the island.  This affects the bayside communities as well and remember that the high tide is an hour later on the bay/marsh side of the island than the ocean side.  If heading to the beach, watch for beach closures and do not swim if there are no lifeguards as the ocean's rip currents are in the "high risk" zone today.  They're extremely dangerous.  Be safe out there.  I'm certainly counting my blessings that the likes of Idalia aren't hitting home for us.

Happy Monday!

This Morning's Live Webcam Shot - NWW

Mornin'!  It's 74° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 90% with a dewpoint of 70°.  It's mostly gray with Ms Sun trying to break through the thick cloud cover. Breezes are out of the East at 8-11mph.  It's looking like a gray, wet day with complete cloudy skies and by this afternoon... rain showers (40% chance).  We could continue to see peeks of sunshine this morning though.
Temps will be in the upper 70s with East winds at 5-15mph.  Tonight... 90% chance of rain with thunderstorms developing overnight.  Temps will drop down just a bit into the low-70s with East winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... Showers likely kicking off the day with a mostly cloudy day and 60% chance of rain throughout the day.  Temps will be much like today only in the upper 70s with East winds becoming Southerly at 5-10mph.  Looks like the same for tomorrow night into Wednesday. There's 60% chance of rain the first half of Wednesday day with possible peeks of sun by the afternoon. I'm not a fan of giving a pretty creepy weather forecast to those who just checked in to enjoy their vacation here this last week of August and "not-official" last week of summer.  September 22nd is the official last day of Summer by the way.  But after we get through these first few days of this week... part of Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday look like perfection in the weather department.  All remains to be seen I guess.  Happy Monday!

Last Sunday In August

Mornin'!  It's 71° in Wildwood NJ.  Ms Sun's up and shining brightly through that morning haze.  Humidity's 90% with a dewpoint of 69°.  Winds are light out of the N-NE at 5-8mph.  It's going to be partly sunny today (some clouds in the mix) with temps in the low-80s and E-NE winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight.. partly to mostly cloudy, temps where they are now... low to mid-70s and E-NE winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... looking slightly "wet" with clouds in the morning, and showers by the afternoon (45% chance).  Temps will be in the mid-upper 70s and E-NE winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow night... 70% chance of precipitation.  Tuesday... 60% chance of precipitation.  Wednesday... a sunny day on tap. Speaking of Wednesday... it's the Full Moon.  In fact, it's the 2nd full moon this month and is known as the "Blue Moon" the biggest and brightest moon of the year!  The tides are already beginning to be higher and lower than normal.  Always know your "low-lying" areas on the island as we'll no doubt see some tidal flooding this week.  Don't drive through flood "salty" waters... not good at all for the undercarriage of your vehicle.  I changed yesterday's blog photo to honor our little Freddy as I forgot it was National Dog Day.  It's hard to believe our home has been this quiet for 2½ years now!  Friday night's canceled fireworks are tonight by the way!

August's Last Weekend - National Dog Day!

Our Little Freddy (and Dad)
Mornin'!  It's 75° in Wildwood NJ.  No sunshine yet due to some heavy clouds and misty fog (right along the coast).  Humidity's 96% with a dewpoint of 73°.  Breezes are light out of the SW at 3-5mph.  The atmosphere is as heavy as you can get this morning.  When checking all the live webcams, you can see the sunrise trying to break through the grayness, but Ms Sun isn't having much luck yet.  Expect some scattered thick cloud cover with the possibility of rain showers and/or thunderstorms developing this morning (30% chance).  Otherwise, it'll be unsettled today with a partly sunny day and temps in the upper 80s with E-SE winds switching to E-NE at 5-10mph.  There is a 30% chance of an isolated shower passing through this afternoon (3-4pm).  Keep your eye on the sky.  Tonight... partly cloudy, temps around 70° with SE winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... partly cloudy skies in the morning giving way to partly sunny skies in the afternoon.  Temps will be in the upper 70s with NE winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow night... mostly cloudy, temps in the low-70s with 20% chance of a shower.  I've checked 4 different weather forecasts for this weekend's weather and not one agreed with the other.  So, your guess is as good as mine for the weather today and tomorrow.  Just keep your eye on the sky and maybe check the doppler now and then.

Happy Friday! The Last One Of August

Entering the island via North Wildwood
Mornin'!  It's 73° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 89% with a dewpoint of 71°.  It's sunny as Ms Sun rose about a half an hour ago.  She's been dealing with some heavy cloud cover here and there as it'll be a partly to mostly cloudy morning.  It's windy... Southerly winds at 15-20mph.  We're going to have a very windy, partly sunny / partly cloudy morning with scattered showers and/or thunderstorms (30% - probably before noon) and then a partly sunny day with those ramped up winds Southerly at 20-30mph and temps around 80°.  By late this afternoon, it's back to 40% chance of rain.  Tonight... scattered showers and storms (50% chance) with temps dropping into the low-70s and South winds at 15-25mph. Tomorrow... a warm one... partly sunny, temps around 90° with those pesky West winds at 5-10mph.  Sunday... mostly sunny, temps around 80° and NE winds at 5-10mph.

And, it's the last Friday of August...
Friday Beach Tip Day (for what it's worth) and this Beach Tip Posting is the last one for this Summer Season...
*Beach Stuff - what to pack... bottled water, a spray bottle of water for you never know what, a hat, footwear, towel, sunblock, insect repellent (for the "West winds" that bring biting green head flies), first aid kit (I include a tiny bottle of vinegar for jelly fish stings), shade (umbrella, canopy of some type), a bungee cord to secure your umbrella for those windy days, something to read, sanitizing wipes, a small trash bag to collect any trash you accumulate.
*When setting up your spot (campsite) at the beach, give those around you a little courtesy and be kind as to not to set up too close to them.  It's always amazing to watch arriving folk completely unaware of their actions as they begin setting up their umbrella, blanket and chair only inches away from those folks already settled in and believe it or not, there's no one else yet at the beach except you. It often feels like new arrivals seek out others to sit close to.  It happens more often than not and I have yet to figure out this strange phenomenon. Most beaches are huge (with the exception of North Wildwood).  First Avenue beach has become more popular this year as that beach grows while the JFK Blvd beach shrinks.
*Know your "tide" times.  You can always ask the lifeguard as they will know.  If the tide is at its highest when you arrive, you can set up right at the water line and watch the beach grow bigger and bigger as the tide slips into its 6 hour low tide. It takes 6 hours for the tide to go from High to Low and then turn around and begin to go from Low to High (12 hour total).
*Tips for setting up your umbrella: be aware of the wind direction and wind speed.  On a windy day, take those extra steps to secure your umbrella.  Sand screws or sand grabbers are great for securing umbrellas and it's best to dig a hole first before twisting that screw in and packing the sand in.  Also, a bungee cord attaching the umbrella to your cooler or beach cart works wonders. It's not uncommon to see umbrellas launched by the winds and more often than not into unknowing folks who are about to be impaled by an airborne, out of control umbrella. And, while the entire family is in the ocean not realizing that their umbrella is 2 blocks away. I've seen it happen many times.  Oh... when opening your umbrella... always face the wind as this phenomenon never disappoints as most of the time, folks turn their back on the wind and open the umbrella. Thus... you now have an inside out, uncontrolled umbrella on your hands.
*Beach Etiquette.  When you walk directily next to someone who's laying on their blanket or sitting on their beach chair, your kicked up sand will almost certainly be tossed all over them; especially if it's windy.  Be conscientious of what you're doing. Teach your children courtesy at the beach. Explain that it's not okay to run or chase one another around someone else's blanket or chair.  Wildwood sand is light and extremely fine and is always kicked up and flung. I've seen toddlers who take off running and onto anyone's blanket in their flight path.  Here's a bit of advice for parents of toddlers on the beach (1-2 year olds)... bring a "pack-n-play" for them as I can assure you that your beach day will be much more enjoyable with those babes surrounded with toys and snacks in their little mesh, private encampment.  I recently saw a young couple of a baby not old enough to walk, dig a round trench about 6" deep and place a piece of plastic (much like a shower curtain) over the 2-3' wide hole and fill it with the ocean water so the babe could be entertained and cooled off in their own little pool.
*Phone use... take it somewhere else.  Working from the beach for all of us to enjoy with you sucks.  Phone calls should be taken as far away from all the hordes of people as possible.  Go to the Dunes.  Trust me, no one wants to hear your conversation.
*If shaking out towels or blankets, be conscious of the wind direction and always shake away from those in the line of your "sand" fire.
*There is "no smoking" of any type on the beach.  Wildwood Crest has a designated smoking area by the dunes.  There's "no smoking" on the boardwalk.  New Jersey has legalized Marijuana and you can smoke it privately on your property but you can't do it in public.  There are no Pot dispensaries in Wildwood.
*For the pooches, there are two dog parks right on the beach.  At 24th and the Beach in North Wildwood and one in Wildwood between Glenwood and Maple on the Beach.  You can walk your dog on the beach but only prior to lifeguards stationed at their posts.  May I suggest NOT bringing your dog's toys/balls to the dog park. Not a good idea at all as 8 other dogs will inevitably charge for your thrown toy.  Dogs must always be on a leash when not in the dog parks.
*If you enjoy music on the beach... remember to pack your headphones.  Believe it or not, the majority of beach folk would much rather listen to the sounds of the surf; not the country twang, heavy metal, bass or hip hop profanity blasting next to them from your Bluetooth speakers.  Sorry... but it's something that happens a lot and it sucks.
*Feeding seagulls is a no-no.  Eat and snack smartly.  Using flailing hands when expressing oneself while holding lunch is a magnet for swooping gulls.  Drop just one potato chip and you'll have seagull havoc.  Eat conscientiously under your umbrella or chair canopy.  Seagulls are vultures and are smart and endlessly eyeing beach goers eating habits.  They're relentless in trying to find the opportune moment to swoop down and pluck lunch right out of your hand or mouth (seen it happen many times).  By the way, seagulls know "chip bags" and if you have an unsupervised beach bag with chip bags exposed, they'll think nothing of helping themselves to that bag and will share their newly acquired bag of Lays Chips with all their gulls family and friends while you're in the ocean without a care in the world.
*Playing ball, Frisbee, horseshoes, corn hole, kite-flying, ladder toss, spike ball, paddle ball, volley ball, Kan-jam, beach darts etc. are not allowed to be set up and played where beach-goers are camped.  Play back by the dunes where no one is sitting.
*Observe all posted signs and warnings... Beach closures due to weather, rip currents or storms, surfing only beaches, no alcohol or pot, no dogs or pets.  If in doubt, just ask the lifeguards.
*Never leave trash on the beach.  Better yet, pick up any that you may see whether it's yours or not.  There are many, many trash and recycle containers on the beach and surrounding areas.  You might as well use them rather than let all that trash drift off and fly into the ocean for the fish to eat or get tangled in. Remember... whatever the fish eat, we eat too.  Plastic is an epidemic.  Speaking of plastic... New Jersey no longer has plastic bags at stores and shops.  It's now all about bringing your reusable bags to save the planet from those fly-away plastic ones.
*Lastly, be courteous.  Courtesy is key.  Be kind and considerate of all those enjoying this beautiful moment along with you. Keep the profanity at home.  It's a lot of fun being at the beach.  Let's enjoy together. Happy Beaching!
