March's Last Roar

Mornin'!  It's 44° in Wildwood NJ.  It's raining at a nice clip with winds out of the SE at 10-15mph.  It'll be miserable this last day of March.  Bring it I say and let March do what it does best to show off and be as creepy as it can be because April's in the wings watching now.  March's temperamental attitude has worn out its welcome but regardless it will definitely be roaring as it heads out of here (thunder is possible today and tonight).  Expect steady rain all day into tonight (100% chance).  Temps will be in the upper 40s / low 50s with winds ramping up out of the E-SE 20-30mph.  Tonight...more rain and winds (S-SE shifting to the West at 20-30mph w/gusting).  Temps will be in the low-mid 40s.  Tomorrow still looks like the grayer of the two weekend days as Ms Sun will return in full force on Sunday! Until next year...sayonara March!

Pleasant but Chilly Thursday

Mornin'!  It's 42° in Wildwood NJ.  It's clear with Ms Sun waiting in the wings for her grand entrance in about a half hour.  Light breezes are out of the NE at 5-10mph.  It'll be a pleasant sunny day with cooler temps...mid-upper 40s and breezes out of the E-SE 13-15mph. There's a 50% chance of rain showers beginning on the overnight.  Breezes will be out of the SE at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow looks like a washout along with major winds.  March is not going to head out without a bang.  Good riddance.  The weekend...still 50-50 with Sunday looking like the sunnier of the two days.

Sunny Hump Day

Mornin'!  It's 48° in Wildwood NJ.  It's cloudy with a light breeze (North 8-10mph).  It smells nice outside (the marshes are fragrant) and the birds are chirping in the distance (no seagulls) as the other island birds are making their dawn presence known today.  It's really nice outside.  It'll be a beauty today with the clouds checking out allowing plenty of sunshine. Temps will be tapping 60° with breezes out of the N-NW at 10-15mph.  Tonight...clear, breezes out of the N-NE at 20-25mph and temps back into the low-mid 40s.  Tomorrow...more sun but much cooler temps.  So far...another 50-50 weekend on tap with Saturday being the grayer of the two days.

Mostly Gray Tuesday

Mornin'!  It's 51° in Wildwood NJ. It's cloudy with a light breeze out of the South at 3-5mph.  Looks like it'll be cloudy throughout the day with 80% chance of rain showers off and on. There's even a chance of a thunderstorm today and tonight.  Who knows though...yesterday turned out to be a lovely Spring day so we may see some clearing or peeks of Ms Sun. Temps will stay right about where they are now around the low-mid 50s as breezes will shift some from the S-SW at 8-10mph.  Tonight...more rain showers, temps in the upper 40s and breezes out of the N-NE at 15-20mph. Ms Sun is expected to return tomorrow and stay checked in.

New Moon Monday!

Mornin'!  And, Happy Birthday to my sister Do. If not for her there would be no Wildwood weather blog.  It was all her idea and a surprise Christmas gift in 2009 (when I had absolutely no idea what a "blog" was and all I ever talked about was the weather down the shore compared to Philadelphia's). She put me on my blog journey by showing me the ropes and giving my weather voice...a platform for my words to be written.  Today's entry is dedicated to her as she celebrates yet another birthday as she continues to catch up to me!  It's 45° and misty in Wildwood NJ.  Lots and lots of moisture in the air as everything's dripping wet. The heavy, thick cloud cover is doing that thing making the ocean's waves crashing down very loud and clear way across the island as my home is much nearer to the marsh than the ocean.  You can faintly hear the roar inside the house.  Love it.  Anyway... we're going to have cloud cover throughout the day as rain showers are on the menu for today.  Temps will be in the low-mid 50s with breezes out of the S-SW at 10-20mph.  One forecast did say peeks of sun today as well.  Tonight...mostly cloudy with a 60% chance of rain showers and scattered thunderstorms and winds out of the South at 10-20mph with temps in the upper 40s.  Tomorrow and tomorrow night...more of the same.  New Moon today so tides could be higher than normal...just an fyi!

Sunday "Gray" One

Mornin'!  It's 43° in Wildwood NJ.  Well, it turned out to be that 50-50 weekend they were talking about.  Yesterday turned into a lovely warm, sunny day as temps got up into the low 70s!  Not this half of the weekend though.  It's currently cloudy and windy (E-NE 20-30mph).  No rain showers but they're coming.  It'll feel windy and raw today with temps staying just about where they are now (they might rise to the upper 40s) but the stiff winds aren't going anywhere.  We have showers in the forecast throughout the evening (50% chance).  Winds will stay checked in and shift some from the E-SE at 15-20mph as it'll turn misty and foggy tonight.  Tomorrow will start out the way Sunday ended as misty light rain and/or fog is the Monday morning forecast. Speaking of rain...it may rain down on the island until Wednesday so keep the bumbershoot handy.  Oh... almost forgot...got some fresh little necks, cod and shrimp in (from the Lobster House) as the plan is to put together some fish chowder for today's (and most likely tonight's) soup.

Sunset:7:19p.m.

If interested in the Fish Chowder Recipe...here's how I'm doing it:
14 oz. Can of Plum Tomatoes
2 C Potatoes
1 C Onions
2 cloves Garlic
1 C Celery
1 C Carrots
1 C Parsnips
½ C Green Bell Pepper
5 C Fish Stock (mine will be from the broth of the little neck clams and shrimp simmering)
2 C Water
2 T Butter
1 Slice Bacon
1 tsp Thyme
3 Bayleaf
Salt and Pepper
½ C fresh parsley
¼ T Crab boil seasoning
½ T Paprika
1-2 lbs of Fish of your choice (I'm using Clams, Shrimp, Cod and canned Crab)
Cook Clams and shrimp and put aside.  When cooled down, remove from their tiny shells and chop. Strain their stock from sand (several times in a cheesecloth filled strainer) and add water to the clam stock.
In a heavy soup Stockpot Sauté the diced onions, green pepper, parsnips, garlic, celery, carrots and potatoes in bacon fat and butter.  After sweating down, add the seasonings and tomatoes (cut up into bite size pieces) with its juice and add the clam broth.  Simmer until tender and add the fish until thoroughly cooked (approx 10-15minutes) and serve.  Bon Apetit!

"Gray" This Last Weekend In March

Mornin'!  It's 56° in Wildwood NJ.  It's clear and still.  No breezes to note.  It'll become partly cloudy this morning then lightly overcast with Ms Sun peeking in this afternoon along with a 20% chance of a shower.  Temps will tap the 60s (even a possibility of 70°) with breezes out of the SW at 10-15mph.  Tonight...overcast with breezes out of the NE at 10-15mph and temps in the low-mid 40s.  Tomorrow looks much like today with cooler temps, windier and 30% chance of showers.  Guess this weekend wasn't as 50-50 as was forecasted but with March things could be a lot worse.

Friday Mix

Mornin'!  It's 38° in Wildwood NJ.  Like yesterday morning...it's clear and starlit with a light breeze out of the E-SE at 3-5mph.  Today will be mostly sunny along with some cloud cover and a high of 50° with blustery winds out of the South at 15-25mph. Tonight...mostly clear with some cloud cover in the mix as temps drop into the mid-upper 40s with breezes out of the S-SW at 12-18mph.  Now the forecasts are saying that the weekend's looking kind of gray but now the possibility of rain isn't until Sunday evening (50% chance).  Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with (if you're lucky) peeks of sun and warmer (low 60s) and Sunday...cloudy (no peeks of sun) but cooler with temps in the upper 40s.  March seems to be unsettled as she's winding down.

Tomorrow...mostly clear with winds out of the N-NW at 20-30mph w/gusting and I'm thinking it'll feel wintry with mid 30° temps.

See Ya Next Year Winter!

Mornin'!  It's 38° in Wildwood NJ.  We're under cloudy, damp and windy conditions (N 18-23mph).  It's not actually raining, but lots of mist and moisture in the windy air.  Everything's covered with dampness.  It's a raw start to the day, and ending of yet another season not to mention perfect weather for some good homemade soup!  It'll be damp and wet for most of the morning as there's a 50% chance of rain showers.  Ms Sun is due to take a peek in by this afternoon   Temps will tap the mid 40s as winds pick up even more out of the N-NE at 25-30mph w/gusting. Tonight...clear with temps in the low 30s and Northerly winds at 10-15mph. It's not only a soup day, but a good weather day to end Winter!  Until December 21st...Aug Wiedersehen (I like to pronounce Wiedersehen with a "V" as my german grandmom did)!  Spring begins tomorrow!

Last Weekend of Winter

Mornin'!  It's 42° in Wildwood NJ.  It's raining lightly with hardly a breeze (SE 3-5mph).  It'll stay just like it is now throughout the day as temps creep up into the upper 40s and breezes ramp up a bit remaining out of the SE at 10-15mph.  It'll be a gray Saturday with rain showers in the forecast right up until tomorrow morning.  Tonight...rain with winds ramping up and switching to the NE at 20-30mph as temps drop back down into the upper 30s / low 40s.  Tomorrow...will begin gray, cold and windy but Ms Sun will eventually enter sometime in the afternoon and take her final bow as the curtain closes on the last weekend of Winter!  Spring begins on Monday (don't get real excited though as it's still March)!  Oh...I forgot to mention that last weekend's homemade soup was Minestrone and today's is Potato-Leek.

In Soup Pot...
Fry bacon until crispy, remove, cool and crumble.  Add butter.

Remove bay leaves then blend everything with the immersion blender.
Add Heavy Cream and continue to blend.
If need be a corn starch slurry can be added to give the broth more thickness (I did it today).
Ladle into a bowl or mug and sprinkle with chopped green onions.
Bon Apetit!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Mornin'!  It's 32° in Wildwood NJ.  It's clear and starlit with very light breezes out of the North at 3-5mph (finally some "light" breezes).  Typically March has been having its way with us.  Today though...we'll have plenty of cloudless blue sky and sunshine with breezes out of the W-NW 10-20mph as temps get up into the low-mid 40s.  Tonight...clouds roll in as showers are due in around midnight.  Temps will be in the upper 30s / low 40s with breezes out of the NE at 5-10mph.  We should be waking to rain tomorrow as temps will be in the mid-upper 40s keeping the white stuff at bay.  However...Sunday could provide the snow showers early but those Spring temps will more than likey hold on.  The entire weekend looks pretty gray at this point.

Mornin'!  It's 29° in Wildwood NJ.  It's clear, starlit, moonlit and breezy (W-NW at 10-15mph w/gusting).  Feels like 20° with the wind chill.  It'll be partly sunny / partly cloudy today with temps in the mid-upper 30s.  Breezes will turn to "winds" out of the W-NW at 20-30mph today.  Tonight...brisk and cold and partly cloudy as breezes remain out of the W-NW at 15-25mph with temps in the upper 20s.  Tomorrow should be around the same with warmer temps (mid 40s) but with rain due in by the evening (50% chance).  The weekend's still 50-50 with Saturday being gray and wet and Sunday may start with snow showers and then become partly sunny. The really big winds seemed to have checked out but with it being March...no comment.

Ides of March

North Wildwood - 2nd and JFK Blvd. Jetty
Mornin'!  It's 25° in Wildwood NJ.  It's cloudy and windy (W-NW at 30-35mph).  It's 11° wind chill factor.  Seems like ages ago that it was quiet and mild outside.  But hey...we never got any snow yesterday (like our friends in the Reading PA area - receiving 22" of snow).  We just had relentless, driving, sideways rains with some major street flooding until mid-morning and yes...for that I'm very grateful.  After the rains, the winds stuck around and dried us up very nicely.  The winds continue to be the main event as they'll bring some heavy cloud cover today with snow showers later this morning (40% chance).  We could possibly see ½ - 1" of the white stuff today.  It'll be mostly cloudy with some peeks of sun here and there today with temps in the low 30s and winds out of the West at 25-35mph with gusting up to 50mph.  Tonight...partly cloudy with temps in the low 20s and those West winds still ramped up at 20-30mph. Tomorrow...Ms Sun checks back in with 25mph winds checked in right along with her. At this time the weekend's looking 50-50...Saturday being the grayer (possibly the wettest - 60% chance of rain) of the two days as a mix of mostly sun with clouds and winds are on tap for Sunday.  It's gonna feel wintry cold for a little while longer I'm sorry to say...but hey...it's March!  And speaking of which...today is "The Ides of March"...the day that Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44b.c.

Stella!

Mornin'!  It's 45° in Wildwood NJ.  Nor'easter Stella is bringing moderate to heavy rain with winds that are wailing over the island from the E-NE at 25-40mph w/gusting.  No tidal flooding in the streets although there are "Coastal Flood" and "High Wind" warnings posted.  There is some minor street flooding going on at the moment due to the rainfall.   It'll stay around the low-mid 40s today with rainfall and at times a snowy mix as winds howl right into this evening. I sit here knowing that my family in Philadelphia and the Philly suburbs are being hammered by Stella with major snowfall and blizzard-like conditions.  It never ceases to amaze me how weird that is being barely two hours away.  The island of Wildwood is being hammered by winds and pelting rains at the moment but no snow.  These conditions will continue into later this afternoon when we might actually see some clearing and some peeks of sun.  Then, the winds will have shifted this evening from the N-NW but still be intense at around 30-35mph.  Temps will drop into the low-mid 30s tonight.  Tomorrow...the temps drop even more into the 20s and we may actually see some dusting of snow on the island.  And, those winds will stick around for several more days!  Remember...it's March.

The Calm before the Roar at the Shore

Mornin'!  It's 25° in Wildwood NJ.  It's a repeat of yesterday...very cold, crisp, clear.  The big moon is shining down on the island making everything look bright and clearly visible.  Not much in the line of breezes (I won't be saying that tomorrow).  There's a light breeze out of the NE at 8-10mph.  It'll be partly cloudy / partly sunny day with temps in the low-mid 30s with breezes out of the E-NE at 10-20mph.  Tonight...temps: low-mid 30s, clouds take over; winds begin blowing (E-NE at 20-30mph and increasing to 25-40mph) as the clouds open up bringing down a steady, soaking rain.  So far, this big giant winter snow Nor'easter looks like a rain event for the south Jersey coast.  We might see a wintry mix.  The beginning of this Nor'easter intends to settle in and hang out through Wednesday evening.  So...strap in as March is about to begin roaring much like the MGM Lion.

Daylight Savings Time - Full Moon - Calm Before The Storm

Mornin'!  Happy Daylight Savings - Full Moon!  I feel like I've really slept in instead of losing an hour this morning!  The clock is saying 9a.m.  It's 26° in Wildwood NJ.  It's partly sunny / partly cloudy.  No breezes to note but it's wintry and crispy cold.  We're going to have a mix of clouds and sun today with temps in the mid-upper 30s and breezes out of the W-NW at 15-20mph.  Tonight....clear with temps in the upper 20s and breezes out of the North at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow...much like today but a tad cloudier.  Okay...now for the Nor'easter heading this way...it'll all beginning tomorrow evening with periods of rain and high-speed train winds (N-NE 35-50mph with up to 60mph gusts). The winds will continue non-stop until sometime Thursday afternoon.  Tuesday will get the heavy hitter with wind driven snow and rain (chance of tidal flooding if it's a mainly rain event) and of course major beach erosion.  Between Monday night and Wednesday...we're looking at a total of 3 inches of white stuff if temperatures stay in the 30s.  Lot's of "ifs" but according to the coastal forecasts...we may miss the big snow accumulation and hopefully last roar of March.  Although one should never turn their back on March (even with those ferocious winds that are due in).

Standard Time's Checking Out

Mornin'!  It's 23° in Wildwood NJ.  It's bright and sunny and calm (no breezes to note).  It's a clear, crisp winter's morn on the island.  It's adios to Eastern Standard Time!  It certainly isn't going to affect this upcoming week's weather though.  March is still roaring like a lion and will continue to do so for days ahead.  Today's weather will be mostly sunny, temps in the mid 30s with winds checking in from the N-NW at 20-30mph giving a chill factor in the teens.  Same for tonight...clear and cold (low-mid 30s) with breezes out of the NW at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow...ditto.  Monday night...the wet stuff returns (could be rain; could be snow) and isn't checking out until Thursday. It's Nor'easter time!  Strap in for this week's upcoming weather (more to come later). At least we'll have more daylight!  Turn your clocks ahead an hour before turning in tonight...it's the start of Daylight Savings Time!

Frosty Friday

Mornin'!  It's 46° in Wildwood NJ.  It's overcast and breezy (North 10-15mph).  No moisture on the overnight or this morning.  However, we're supposed to expect a wintry mix beginning sometime this morning.  There's a 90% chance of rain/snow showers today as temps drop into the mid-upper 30s with breezes ramping up out of the NE at 20-25mph w/gusting.  Don't expect to see an accumulation on this one. Tonight...cold (low 20s) and windy (NW 20-30mph) with mostly clear skies.  We're going to have a bite in the air as the much colder temps and windy conditions will be creating a chill factor.  Ending on a good note...lots of sunshine this chilly weekend!

It's noisy outside.  It's raining.  It's windy...SW 25-30mph w/gusting (and howling).  The thick cloud cover is making the roar of the ocean sound like it's across the street (I'm 6+ blocks away) as the heavy cloud cover insulates the sounds of the waves crashing.  We'll start out as wet and cloudy as it'll become mostly sunny by this afternoon.  Temps will stay were they are now and rise just a bit into the low 50s.  Winds will be out of the West at 10-20mph.  Tonight...clear with temps in the upper 40s and breezes out of the W-SW at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow looks mild with sunshine and pleasant temps (mid-upper 50s) and Friday looks cloudy with rain likely.  Saturday night into Sunday morning still looks cold with a chance of the white stuff.  Speaking of Sunday...Full Moon and the start of Daylight Savings Time!

Sunny Monday

Sunset Lake - Wildwood Crest NJ
Mornin'!  It's 27° in Wildwood NJ.  It's clear with plenty of stars twinkling above.  No breezes to note as it's quiet and still.  It's cold out there but not bad without those pesky winds.  It'll be a decent winter's day with abundant sunshine as she'll be rising in less than an hour.  Temps will climb up into the mid-40s with breezes out of the South at 8-11mph.  Tonight...clear with temps staying in the 40s with breezes out of the South at 15-20mph.  The week ahead has some gray weather lined up...tomorrow looks cloudy and windy; Wednesday has a chance of rain in the forecast; Thursday...more rain in the forecast; Friday...cloudy start with a possibility of sunshine; Saturday and Sunday...more clouds with showers (hate writing this but even the possibility of "snow") in the weekend forecast.  There's sunshine ahead but after today...good luck finding it!

Wintry First Sunday in March

North Wildwood NJ - The Wall
Mornin'!  It's 18° in Wildwood NJ.  It's breezy with winds out of the North at 20-27mph equalling a chill factor of 1°.  I knew Winter wasn't finished with us yet, but this is ridiculous.  March's wrath is swirling over the island in biting Winter mode.  It really feels brutal after experiencing a mild February.  Anyway...today will warm up some but I'd recommend not packing away the hats, scarves and gloves as today will be on the wintry side with temps barely reaching the upper 30s with breezes out of the N-NW at 20-30mph (doesn't include the windchill). The sky will be clear and bright blue as Ms Sun does her best to warm us.  Tonight...clear as temps will be in the upper 20s with light and variable breezes.  Tomorrow...less winds, higher temps (upper 40s) and more of the plentiful sunshine. Speaking of sunshine...this time next week, it'll be the start to daylight savings time...more daylight and sunshine!

Blasted Winter Weekend

Mornin'!  It's 27° in Wildwood NJ.  Whew...it's back to winter this morning!  It's windy...N-NW 10-15mph with a chill factor of 20°.  The sky is clear and ready for Ms Sun's grand entrance as she's rising as I type.  It'll be sunny early with partly cloudy skies and gusty winds (NW 20-30mph) checking in this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid-upper 30s today.  No snow squalls (like yesterday's) in this weekend's forecast. Tonight...clear with temps in the mid teens with breezes out of the North at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow...pretty much the same with no clouds...full sunshine and cold temps.

Blustery Friday

North Wildwood - 2nd Street Beach
Mornin'!  It's 37° in Wildwood NJ.  The sky is clear and starlit.  Breezes are light out of the N-NW at 3-6mph.  It's crisp and cold and quiet out there.  Today we'll have a mix of clouds and sun as temps barely tap 40°.  Those March winds...well they're back later from the NW at 15-25mph and by tonight...NW at 30-35mph. Here's a head's up...a couple forecasts reported snow showers throughout the day but with no accumulation.  Tonight...partly cloudy, cold and in the low-mid 20s and add to that those NW winds and we've got us a chill factor (feeling like we're in the teens).  And, the same for the weekend as it's looking cold (temps in the mid 30s) with plenty of sunshine pouring down but those March winds won't settle down until Sunday night.  It looks like the warmer temps (upper 40s/low 50s) do return on Monday.

March continues to roar!

North Wildwood - Hereford Lighthouse Park
Mornin'!  It's 50° in Wildwood NJ.  It's a tad breezy (thank you very much March) with 35-45mph winds out of the W-NW with gusts of 50+ mph.  Bring it on!  My porch furniture was reconfigured this morning. The sounds of wifts (I mean "wafts") is like hearing and feeling a high-speed train blowing down the street.  Ms Sun will be shining down all day.  No rain in the forecast.  Temps will be lowering a bit as the high today will be in the mid-upper 40s.  Tonight...clear and windy (W-NW at 20-25mph) with temps in the low 40s.  Tomorrow looks like a repeat of today as the winds aren't checking out until Sunday.  And get this...the high this weekend will be 35°.  It's roaring!

It's Here!!!

Mornin'!  March has entered the weather scene!  And, it'll be coming in foggy and gentle and turning into a blast.  It's 49° in Wildwood NJ.  It's quiet and foggy and it's drippy but not raining.  I think of these dark, still, wet, soupy, early mornings as perfect ambiance for a scary movie with footsteps in a dark alley. Don't let the early morning stillness fool you.  March is here and can be brutal. It's my least favorite month of the year due to the fact that this month usually holds nothing more than intense winds and unsettled, miserable, chilly, windy, cool air.  Not to mention it teases you as it could provide a terrific sneak peak of spectacular warm weather one day and bam...it hits you upside your head and gives you a non-stop cold, blustery string of days with winds that can make you begin screaming up at the sky begging for it to STOP! You know the kind...days of not being able to open a car door without it being blown off!  It'll be mostly cloudy and gray today with a 40% chance of rain showers and/or thunderstorms later this afternoon.  No winds to note now but they're coming later this morning...out of the S-SW at 20-30mph w/gusts of 40+mph.  Temps will be mild and could tap 60°.  Tonight...back into the upper 40s with more unsettled, stormy, extreme windy weather. Ms Sun returns tomorrow but with much colder temps (low 40s) and even more wicked winds out of the N-NW at 20-30mph with gusting of over 50mph.
