The "Norm"
Mornin'! It's 62° in WW this morning. Sun's just about over the horizon. Everthing is fine as normalcy is once again back in this islander's life. After arriving home yesterday afternoon and sitting out Hurricane Irene in Pennsylvania 90 miles from here last Friday until Sunday, I surprisingly discovered I missed the bullet as there was no damage to our home. No broken windows, not one tree down (we have 3 on our property), no torn canvas awnings, no flashing lights on appliances, no loss of electricity or gas, no water in the house (although there's a small leak of some kind in the front porch and some water under the house in the crawl space and water still in the back yard). Nothing was amiss...everything is exactly how we left it. Alot to be thankful for and all that anxiety...wasted. Today's weather...a beauty...just reaching 80°...blue skies will abound with minimal breezes out of the North at 5-10mph. A lovely day at the Shore. High tide:8:07a.m.; Low tide:2:19p.m.; Ocean temp:73°; Sunset:7:33p.m. My suggestion is make it a beach day. No one's here yet! Speaking of the beach...sorry to report that did take a hit and suffered some major beach erosion.

146 miles from Cape May
Evening'! Been hunkered down at our daughters in Pennsylvania preparing for the pounding later. It's warm out as the A.C. is on cooling the house. Rain is pouring down in torrents...it's intense tropical conditions. Not much wind is happening yet. There's quite a few very large trees in this area which is of major concern. As for Wildwood...I've been in touch with some WW folk this evening and it's doing the same thing there only with winds now kicking up - heavy winds but the storm is still 146 miles away. It's high tide and new moon as I type. The ocean is now in the streets. Not much more to report other than that ominous feeling of dread as the storm will impact us tonight while we try to sleep. God bless us everyone.
90 miles away
Mornin'! I'm 90 miles away from WW safe and sound at daughter & son-in-law's home in Bucks County. Evacuation was a breeze. Unlike preparing for the evacation. Our drive (no tolls as tolls were suspended) was effortless as we left the highway and took the back roads and beat any traffic out there. In checking the shore weather today...it's basically the same as yesterday...warm, muggy, quiet before the storm arrives tonight. It'll probably begin raining sometime this afternoon and eventually Irene will arrive pounding Wildwood like its never been pounded before beginning this afternoon. (just heard it's begun to rain in Cape May at 7a.m.) Here's a live feed to follow...www.wildwoodmag.com/
I'll be watching. We'll all be watching.

Evacuation Day!
Mornin'! It's 73° this dark, early morn. Talk about quiet. Not a breeze to be had. Not a car on my street other than my own. As I stand on my front landing looking in the direction of Rio Grande Ave., all I see are cars bumper to bumper heading off the island and it's only 5a.m. It's the calm before the storm on this evacuation day. New Jersey is under a State of Emergency says our Governor. And the Director of Emergency Managment has issued a mandatory order of evacuation. He actually said "if you do not leave, prepare by putting an index card inside your left shoe marked with your name, social security number, next of kin and a phone number for identification purposes." After typing this blog, my personal evacuation begins as I head out of Wildwood leaving my home as I once knew it. I'm as hunkered down as I can get for the time being and the rest is in Mother Nature's hands. Today will be mostly sun with periods of clouds as there's a chance of showers sometime later this afternoon. Tomorrow much of the same with more clouds than sun. It'll be muggy and humid both days. Tomorrow night (Saturday) is the window for Irene's impact as heavy rains and intense winds will begin. She'll roar through right into early Sunday evening. It's a new moon as well so the tides will have a huge impact with the floods and tidal surge as the hurricane crushes the island. Tides will be in that 7p.m.-8p.m. hour (Sat.and Sun). Winds will be 75mph sustained and 100mph gusts. Can't believe I'm typing those numbers. By late Sunday evening...calmness should begin to be felt as islanders begin to return home and access what Irene's left in her path. I guess that's all I got as I sign off with hopes of sitting in this exact spot ready to blog about the aftermath! Good luck to all of us in her path!

Another Beauty!
Footnote: at 1:51p.m. today...an earthquake could be felt on the island! Apparently the epicenter 5.8 magnitude was in Virginia and could be felt up and down the eastern seaboard and as far inland as central PA. There was a 5.3 in Colorado at 5 o'clock this morning too! Might be more than summer coming to an end.

Not-So Sunsational Sunday
Mornin'! It's 75° this dark, dreary morning. Forecast doesn't look too promising. Not to mention the North Wildwood Flea Market is today...rain or shine and there's no shine in today's forecast. The success of this huge annual event remains to be seen. It'll be cloudy and humid today with showers and/or thunderstorms periodically (90% chance with 1-2 inches forecasted). There could be periods of no-rain, but they'll be few. Temps will be in the low-80's with a Southerly wind at 16-20mph with gusting. High tide:8:37a.m.; Low tide:2:39p.m.; Ocean Temp: 78°; Sunset: 7:56p.m.
