Auf Wiedersehen June!

Mornin'!  It's 72° in Wildwood NJ. This is it June! You've been good to us this year as you go out with a bang.  It's been hard raining here in Wildwood this very early morning and for the last few hours.  As my husband would say, "It's raining harder than a bull pissing on a flat rock".  At the moment, it' not raining at all and all those flood water (we had some minor street flooding) have thankfully receded.  Plus, we're on our way to low tide which helps with street flooding.  Humidity's 93% with a dewpoint of 71°.  Winds are out of the S-SW at 5-10mph.  Expect a mostly gray day with 90% chance of rain plus those thunderstorms. They're going to be looming and surrounding us throughout the day potentially giving us more of those real heavy downpours as well as that thunder and lightning.  Temps will be around 80° with S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tonight... 80% chance of unsettled, wet, stormy weather.  We could see more thunderstorms and heavy rain with gusty winds as temps drop into the low-mid 60s.  Winds look to be initially out of the W-SW shifting from the N-NW all at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... July kicks off with a sunny day, temps around 80° and North winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow night... clear, temps around 70° with N-NE winds at 5-10mph.  Tuesday... sunny, temps around 75° and N-NE breezes.  Until next year, June... see ya on the other side!

Last Weekend In June Is Upon Us

Mornin'!  It's 67° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 58% with a dewpoint of 54° along with breezy conditions as the NE winds are wafting over the island at 15-20mph.  Ms Sun's up and shining over us.  The island birds are everywhere expressing their happiness.  It's a cool, sunny, breezy, beautiful morning down the Shore.  In other words, windows are open and the curtains are-a-fluttering!   Expect a cooler than normal day with breezy, partly sunny conditions, temps in the low-mid 70s and E-NE winds at 15-25mph.  Tonight... partly clear, temps around 70° and E-SE winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... cloudy early becoming sunny later, temps around 80° and S-SE winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow night... mostly cloudy, low-mid 70s and South winds at 10-15mph.  Sunday... off and on rain showers, temps around 80° and S-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Sunday night... 60% chance of rain, temps in the mid-70s and W-SW winds at 10-15mph.
High Tide: 1:42PM
Low Tide: 7:26AM
Ocean Temp: 70°
Sunrise: 5:36AM
Sunset: 8:28PM
UV Index: 9.9 (very high)
Rip Current: Moderate risk (life threatening currents are a possibility in the surf zones; swim only near a lifeguard).
And, it's Friday, you know what that means!
Here are those ol' Friday Beach Tips...
*Beach Stuff - what to pack... bottled water, a spray bottle of water for you never know what, a hat, footwear, towel, sunblock, insect repellent (for the "West winds" that bring biting green head flies), first aid kit (I include a tiny bottle of vinegar for jelly fish stings), shade (umbrella, canopy of some type), a bungee cord to secure your umbrella for those windy days, something to read, sanitizing wipes, a small trash bag to collect any trash you accumulate.
*When setting up your spot (campsite) at the beach, give those around you a little courtesy and be kind as to not to set up too close to them.  It's always amazing to watch arriving folk completely unaware of their actions as they begin setting up their umbrella, blanket and chair only inches away from those folks already settled in and believe it or not, there's no one else yet at the beach except you. It often feels like new arrivals seek out others to sit close to.  It happens more often than not and I have yet to figure out this strange phenomenon. Most beaches are huge (with the exception of North Wildwood).  First Avenue beach has become more popular this year as that beach grows while the JFK Blvd beach shrinks.
*Know your "tide" times.  You can always ask the lifeguard as they will know.  If the tide is at its highest when you arrive, you can set up right at the water line and watch the beach grow bigger and bigger as the tide slips into its 6 hour low tide. It takes 6 hours for the tide to go from High to Low and then turn around and begin to go from Low to High (12 hour total).
*Tips for setting up your umbrella: be aware of the wind direction and wind speed.  On a windy day, take those extra steps to secure your umbrella.  Sand screws or sand grabbers are great for securing umbrellas and it's best to dig a hole first before twisting that screw in and packing the sand in.  Also, a bungee cord attaching the umbrella to your cooler or beach cart works wonders. It's not uncommon to see umbrellas launched by the winds and more often than not into unknowing folks who are about to be impaled by an airborne, out of control umbrella. And, while the entire family is in the ocean not realizing that their umbrella is 2 blocks away. I've seen it happen many times.  Oh... when opening your umbrella... always face the wind as this phenomenon never disappoints as most of the time, folks turn their back on the wind and open the umbrella. Thus... you now have an inside out, uncontrolled umbrella on your hands.
*Beach Etiquette.  When you walk directly next to someone who's laying on their blanket or sitting on their beach chair, your kicked up sand will almost certainly be tossed all over them; especially if it's breezy.  Be conscientious of what you're doing and where you're walking. Teach your children courtesy at the beach. Explain that it's not okay to run or chase one another around someone else's blanket or chair.  Wildwood sand is very light and powdery.  On a breezy day, one can be covered in a light coating of sand thanks to careless folk around you.
*If shaking out towels or blankets, be conscious of the wind direction and always shake away from those in the line of your "sand" fire. I've seen toddlers who take off running usually onto anyone's blanket in their path.  Here's a bit of advice for parents of toddlers on the beach (1-2 year olds)... bring a "pack-n-play" for them as I can assure you that your beach day will be much more enjoyable with those babes surrounded with toys and snacks in their little mesh, private encampment.  I recently saw a young couple of a baby not old enough to walk, dig a round trench about 6" deep and place a piece of plastic (much like a shower curtain) over the 2-3' wide hole and fill it with the ocean water so the babe could be entertained and cooled off in their own little pool.  It was an ingenious way to keep the baby happy for a long period of time.
*Phone use... take it somewhere else. Talking loudly or working on your phone for all of us to enjoy really sucks.  Phone calls should be taken as far away from all the hordes of people as possible.  Go to the Dunes.  Trust me, no one wants to hear your conversation; especially on "speaker".
*There is "no smoking" of any type on the beach.  Wildwood Crest has a designated smoking area by the dunes.  There's "no smoking" on the boardwalk.  New Jersey has legalized Marijuana and you can smoke it privately on your property but you can't do it in public.  There are no Pot dispensaries in Wildwood.
*For the pooches, there are two dog parks right on the beach.  At 24th and the Beach in North Wildwood and one in Wildwood between Glenwood and Maple on the Beach.  Dogs must always be on a leash when not in the dog parks. And, you can walk your dog on the beach when lifeguards are NOT at their posts and only then.
*If you enjoy music on the beach... remember to pack your headphones.  Believe it or not, the majority of beach folk would much rather listen to the sounds of the surf; not your choice of music blasting next to them from your Bluetooth speakers.  Sorry... but it's something that happens a lot and it sucks.
*Feeding seagulls is a no-no.  Eat and snack smartly.  Using flailing hands when expressing oneself while holding lunch is a magnet for swooping gulls.  Drop just one potato chip and you'll have seagull havoc.  Eat conscientiously under your umbrella or chair canopy.  Seagulls are vultures and are smart and endlessly eyeing beach goers eating habits.  They're relentless in trying to find the opportune moment to swoop down and pluck lunch right out of your hand or mouth (seen it happen many times).  By the way, seagulls know "chip bags" and if you have an unsupervised beach bag with chip bags exposed, they'll think nothing of helping themselves to that bag and will share their newly acquired bag of Lays Chips with all their gulls family and friends while you're in the ocean without a care in the world.
*Playing ball, Frisbee, horseshoes, corn hole, kite-flying, ladder toss, spike ball, paddle ball, volley ball, Kan-jam, beach darts etc. are not allowed to be set up and played where beach-goers are camped.  Play back by the dunes where no one is sitting.
*Observe all posted signs and warnings... Beach closures due to weather, rip currents or storms, surfing only beaches, no alcohol or pot, no dogs or pets.  If in doubt, just ask the lifeguards.
*Never leave trash on the beach.  Better yet, pick up any that you may see whether it's yours or not.  There are many, many trash and recycle containers on the beach and surrounding areas.  You might as well use them rather than let all that trash drift off and fly into the ocean for the fish to eat or get tangled in. Remember... whatever the fish eat, we eat too.  Plastic is an epidemic.  Speaking of plastic... New Jersey no longer has plastic bags at stores and shops.  It's now all about bringing your reusable bags to save the planet from those fly-away plastic ones.
*Lastly, be courteous.  Courtesy is key.  Be kind and considerate of all those enjoying this beautiful moment along with you. Keep the profanity at home.  It's a lot of fun being at the beach.  Let's enjoy together. Happy Beaching!

Last Week Of June

This Morning's Webcam Shot - North WW

Mornin'!  It's 78° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 82% with a dewpoint of 75°.  We're under cloud cover with Ms Sun doing all she can to shine through.  Winds are light out of the West at  4-8mph.  It's as sticky as it can be and hits you like a wall of thick heat and humidity when stepping outside.  Even throughout this past beautiful weather weekend with cool temps and stiff ocean breezes, I had my home closed up and air conditioner on to help with keeping the sounds of the weekend at bay.  I thoughtlessly presumed when first stepping outside this morning it was going to be breezy and pleasant.  Not happening.  It's hot and heavy out there. Expect showers and/or thunderstorms this morning (50% chance), mostly cloudy through mid-morning with gradual clear by afternoon.  It'll be a sunny, warm and breezy Monday.  Temps will be in the mid-upper 80s with West winds turning SW then NW by afternoon all at 15-25mph.  Tonight... clear, temps in the upper 60s and NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tuesday... sunny, temps near 90° and NW winds at 5-10mph.  Tuesday night... mostly clear, temps around 70° and South winds at 10-15mph.  Wednesday... sunny, temps near 90° and SW winds at 10-15mph.  We could see rain showers and/or thunderstorms Wednesday night on the overnight.  Thursday... mostly sunny, temps near 90° with possible showers in the early morning.  It looks fairly decent for this last week in June and first week of Summer.

Mostly to Partly Sunny Sunday

Today's Webcam Sunrise Shot - North WW

Mornin'!  It's 68° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 97% with a dewpoint of 71°.  Breezes are out of the S-SW at 10-15mph.  And, Ms Sun's up and shining brightly through the hazy sky. There's a "heat advisory" posted today until 8pm tonight.  It'll be mostly sunny... actually a mix of sun and clouds today.  The wind will increase and by this afternoon become gusty (S-SW at 15-25mph).  The temperature will be somewhere in the 90s.  Tonight... windy with scattered thunderstorms this evening becoming more widespread overnight.  It'll become cloudy overnight. Temps will will be in the low-70s with S-SW winds at 20-30mph.  Chance of rain is 70%.  Tomorrow... sunshine along with some clouds thrown in the mix.  There's a 25% chance of a stray shower or passing thunderstorm.  Keep your eye on the sky (or doppler). Temps will be in the mid-upper 80s with W-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... clear, temps in the low-mid 70s and NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tuesday... sunny, temps in the mid-upper 80s and W-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Anytime you see "West" anywhere in the wind direction, prepare accordingly if going to the beach.  The "greenhead" Flies inevitably arrive at the beach via the west winds and always seem hungry looking for human blood.   They bite, draw blood and always leave an itchy welt.  My hubby got it twice already this summer.  I can't repeat enough... pack the insect repellent.  Oh... and remember footwear for that hot sand and don't forget that bungee cord for strapping your umbrella down as today's winds will have to be dealt with.
High Tides: 9:10AM and 9:32PM

Full Moon Friday

Mornin'!  Happy Friday!  Happy Summer!  It's 69° in Wildwood NJ.  Breezes are out of the SW at 4-6mph. Humidity's 91% with a dewpoint of 68°.  Ms Sun's up over the horizon without that layer of mist that we had yesterday morning.  In fact, that low layer of light fog hung over the water's edge along the beach most of the morning and early afternoon.  It helped keep the beach much cooler than the rest of the island.  With Ms Sun now up, todays' warm-up has begun!  And, who knows, we could see some of that patchy fog this morning again. One thing's for certain... it'll be sunny and warm today with temps in the low-mid 80s and S-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Winds could become stronger this afternoon.  I'd have my bungee cord to anchor my umbrella if going to the beach.  Always travel with that bungee.  Tonight... clear, moonlit (Full "Strawberry" Moon tonight) skies, temps in the low-70s and S-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... another sunny day, temps in the mid-upper 80s and S-SW winds at 15-20mph.  Tomorrow night... patchy fog, temps in the low-mid 70s and South winds at 10-15mph.  Sunday... kicking off the day with possible patchy fog, mostly sunny Sunday, temps near 90° and South winds at 10-15mph.  Sunday night... 70% chance of rain, thunderstorms a possibility, temps in the low-mid 70s and S-SW winds at 15-25mph.

And, here are those old Friday Beach Tips. For what it's worth and already by the looks of things at the beach, not many have a clue how to prepare or behave while enjoying a beach day.  I actually feel like it's a waste of time to even post these tips.  My hubby said, "Why bother?"  So far this beach season, I've witnessed music being turned on loudly right next to me (8' away) ending my pleasant surf sounds, a woman smoking her Marlboro directly in front of me with those southerly breezes wafting her smoke directly over me, kids running repeatedly all around me and my blanket and even right up to me (face to face) thinking I was his mom at one point, a woman sitting way to close to me on her sandchair talking loudly into her phone being held away at her knee while on speaker, a man and his son playing a game of catch football so close to me that the ball kept coming inches from my feet, a woman finishing her bag of potato chips and thoughtlessly dumping the little leftover crumbs onto the beach next to her (and me) immediately bringing over a dozen seagulls fighting for those crumbs.  After she created that havoc, she looked at me, shrugged and smiled broadly. So, I'm done.  No more reports of the asses on the beach. But, speaking of "asses" my sister has been urging me to keep a photo journal of the new style of bathing suits that are now in fashion... thong suits.  If you have a perfect ass, I say what do you got to lose... go for it.  But most have inappropriate (hubby calls them "cheesy") giant asses not suitable for public review and thong bathing suits.  I guess they didn't think to use a hand mirror to check out their rear ends in the fitting room.  Maybe a new blog idea.  I'll say no more.
I'm going for it and will post these beach tips anyway...

Summer's Here!

Mornin'! Happy Summer!  Summer is now in the Northern Hemisphere for the next 3 months today being the longest day of the year.  Not to mention the Full (Strawberry) Moon is tomorrow.  And, our Tides are already reacting to it.   It's 69° in Wildwood NJ. Nice Weekend Ahead

Mornin'!  Happy Saturday!  It's 70° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's down... 59% with a dewpoint of 57°.  Speaking of "humidity" here's an fyi... If humidity levels are between 55 and 65 it's feeling a bit sticky.  Greater than 65, which has plenty of moisture in the air, it's beginning to feel oppressive.  If it's above 70%, the air can feel stifling and suffocating at this high level and can lead to excessive sweating with any physical exertion. If the air is around 90-100% relative humidity, sweat won't evaporate into the air and as a result, we feel hotter than the temperature. That's when it's best to be in air conditioning or near water to keep cooled down.
Back to the weather... It's comfortable outside with much lower humidity, breezes out of the West at 10-15mph as Ms Sun's shines brightly.  No cloud cover to report.  It'll be a lovely day with plenty of sunshine, temps in the low-80s and winds out of the West at 10-20mph (yesterday we got up to 86°). Tonight... clear with a few clouds, temps in the upper 60s and S-SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... a mix of sun and clouds, temps in the low-80s and West winds at 10-20mph.  There's a 15% chance of a rain shower.  Tomorrow night... partly cloudy, temps in the low-70s and NW winds at 5-10mph.  Monday... sunny, temps around 80° with W-NW winds at 10-15mph.

Anniversary of "D-Day"

Mornin'!  It's "D-Day". Today we honor our troops and allied armies in what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history in Normandy France achieving their objective which was gaining a foothold in liberating Europe and of course securing our freedoms. In the course of this daring invasion 80 years ago today, 160,000 troops landed by sea and air on the French coast.  More than 9,000 were killed or wounded - the majority of them American.
It's 69° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 89% with a dewpoint of 69°.  We're under mostly cloud cover above the entire island.  It seems the backside of the island has more blue sky visible.  Ms Sun's has peeked through a few times but at the moment... gray.  Winds are out of the SW at 10-15mph.  It'll be a mostly cloudy gray morning with Ms Sun peeking in but by this afternoon... thunderstorms (70% chance).  We could have gusty winds and small hail.  Temps will be in the low-80s with SW winds at 10-20mph +gusting.  Tonight... thunderstorms on the forecast with rain (70% chance).  Unsettled weather tonight will settle down and give way to partly cloudy skies after midnight, temps in the upper 60s and W-SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... a mix of mostly sunshine with some clouds, temps in the low-80s and West winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... clear, low-70s, W-NW winds at 5-10mph.  Saturday... sunny, mid-upper 70s, West winds at 5-10mph;  Saturday night... clear, low-70s, W-SW breezes.  Sunday... partly to mostly cloudy, temps in the upper 70s with light and variable winds. There's a 25% chance of rain in the evening.  It's the "New Moon" today which means it's invisible but pulling on the tides just like a Full Moon does.  Expect higher than normal tides and be aware of low-lying areas and high tide times.  In the event of heavy rain during high tide times, be aware of where you drive and park your vehicle.

Great "Election Day" Weather

Rented Beach Box Lockers

Mornin'!  It's 67° in Wildwood NJ.  Ms Sun's shining in the clear, blue sky.  It's quiet except for the island birds who always seem so happy in the morning.  Breezes are light out of the East at 3-5mph.  It'll be a beauty today with a mix of sun and clouds, temps in the mid-upper 70s and E-SE winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... areas of patchy fog with mostly cloudy skies, temps in the mid-60s and E-SE winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... considerable cloudiness, occasional rain showers in the afternoon (40% chance), temps in the mid-upper 70s and S-SE winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... 70% chance of rain, temps around 70° and Southerly breezes at 10-15mph.  Thursday... rain in the morning (70% chance), partly sunny, temps around 80° and SW breezes at 10-15mph.  There's a "Coastal Flood" advisory posted for tonight between 5pm and 10pm during the high tide.  I guess Thursday's New Moon has something to do with the higher than normal tides.  I wouldn't be surprised if we do see some tidal flood waters on the island in the next couple days with rain in our forecast and the New Moon looming.  Know your low-lying areas on the island that flood all the time, remember that the back of the island (marsh/bay-side) has high tide one hour after the ocean's high tide.  Be mindful of where you park.  And, don't drive through flood waters... salty, corrosive waters do a #%*@load of damage to the undercarriage of your vehicle.  And, today's Primary Election Day in New Jersey.  The nice weather is on your side... get out in the salty air and Vote!

Mornin'!  It's 69° in Wildwood NJ.  It rained lightly during the early morning hours as we've been watered nicely.  No chance of seeing the alignment of those 6 planets lined up perfectly.  I was up checking at 4am believe it or not.  We're currently under cloud cover with the sky brightening as I type.   Ms Sun's up there and trying her best to shine through.  Winds are out of the W-SW at 4-8mph.  It'll be a nice day with a mix of sun and clouds, the possibility of a stray shower (15% chance), temps in the upper 70s and SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tonight... partly cloudy, temps in the mid-60s and SE winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... another day with a mix of sun and clouds, temps in the low-mid 70s and East winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... partly cloudy, temps in the upper 60s and E-SE breezes.  Wednesday... looks like it could be a rainy day (40% chance), with temps in the low-70s and SE breezes.

Sunday Mix

Mornin'!  It's 63° in Wildwood NJ.  Ms Sun's up and trying to glow through the hazy, white, partly cloudy sky.  Winds are out of the SW at 9-11mph.  It's a lovely morning down the Shore albeit not full on sunshine. This afternoon will be partly sunny becoming partly cloudy, overcast and gray with temps in the low-mid 70s and S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tonight... cloudy with 75% chance of rain later in the evening and overnight.  Tonight's temps will be in the mid-60s with S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... showers in the morning (60% chance), partly sunny by the afternoon with temps in the mid-70s and S-SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow night... partly cloudy, temps in the mid-60s with light and variable winds.  If for some reason we don't have those rain clouds in the early morning of Monday June 3rd, we're supposed to have an event that occurs once every 10 years which is six planets (Saturn, Neptune, Mars, Uranus, Mercury and Jupiter) will all align in a straight line exactly one hour before sunrise (between 4:30-5:30am).  If the sky (East-Southeast) is clear and somewhat dark before dawn tomorrow... we will be able to see Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Mars with the naked eye.
High Tide: 5:09PM
Low Tide: 10:37AM
Ocean Temp: 65°
Sunrise: 5:35AM
Sunset 8:20PM

Today's the start to hurricane season.  And, unfortunately that season doesn't end until November 30th.  I've been through a couple and frankly, hurricane season is nothing to joke about and in my opinion very scary.  In fact, this 2024 season has some statistics that are already quite alarming.
At a glance...
Tropical waves are already forming.
El Niño is expected to shift toward La Niña which historically enhances storms.
Ocean water is currently much warmer than usual.  The Caribbean to West Africa is where most storms form and the waters there have already reached their average peak temperature when it's usually in late summer.  The deeper and warmer the ocean water is, the more powerful a hurricane can become.
Hurricane outlook numbers are the highest forecasted by NOAA predicted 85% chance of an above-normal season.
There are predicted 25 named storms: 13 hurricanes (7 of which are major). These are the Atlantic names:
