August Is Taking Its Curtain Call With Some Nice Weather Today

Mornin'!  Happy Labor Day Weekend!  It's the close of August today too!  Other than a few days the first week of the month, we've had lovely weather this month and is very much appreciated.  Thank you August! It seems like I was just writing my blog welcoming Memorial Day Weekend and in a blink of an eye, it's Labor Day Weekend.
It's 69° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 96% with a dewpoint of 69°.  Winds have simmered down and are now breezes out of the NE at 4-6mph.  It's cloudy with Ms Sun trying her best to peek through one small, opened space.  These morning clouds will fade away as we're going to have partly sunny skies early becoming a sunny day.  Temps will get into the upper 70s possibly hitting 80° with East winds at 5-10mph.  Tonight... partly to mostly cloudy skies, temps around 70°, and South winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... unsettled with scattered rain showers and/or thunderstorms in the morning, mainly cloudy in the afternoon with 60% chance of rain and/or thunderstorms.  Storms may have strong gusty winds.  Temps will be in the upper 70s with SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... 30% chance of rain and/or thunderstorms, mostly cloudy, temps in the upper 60s with SW winds at 5-10mph.  Monday... mostly sunny, temps near 80° with North winds at 5-10mph.  Monday night... clear, temps barely tapping 60°!  Until next year August... thanks for your extraordinary weather this year and we'll see you on the other side!  22 days until Autumn.  And, thank you to all of you who take time to read my weather words.  I enjoy your comments and appreciate you!

Opposite Of Beautiful Weather Ahead

This Morning's Webcam Shot - North WW
Mornin'!  It's 71° in Wildwood NJ.  We've got dark, gray cloud cover, stiff winds out of the E-NE at 15-25mph+gusting.  We've got high humidity at 90% and a dewpoint of 68°.  We had some light misty rain overnight but no rain coming down at the moment.  The Blog's late due to grocery shopping at 7:00AM but not before hitting the Bagel Depot first (opened at 6:30AM).  It's the thing to do on the top of a Holiday weekend.  Even our Check-out lady commented on how incredible crowded and intense this day will be at the grocery store.  I'm happy to report, I got pretty much in and out with my Watermelon and Jersey corn as well as a cart full of stuff before the rain and crowds!  It'll be a shitty weather day with no sunshine, morning clouds turning to rain clouds this afternoon (70% chance of rain), temps in the mid-70s and stiff winds proceeding until later tonight out of the East at 15-25mph +gusting.  Tonight... 40% chance of rain, becoming more intermittent overnight, temps in the upper 60s and E-NE winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... cloudy early, becoming partly sunny later in the day, 25% chance of a passing shower, temps in the upper 70s and E-NE winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow night... partly clear, temps in the low-70s and Southerly breezes at 5-10mph.  Sunday... 70% chance of rain, temps near 80° with S-SW breezes at 5-10mph.  Sunday night... 50% chance of rain, temps in the mid-70s and W-SW breezes at 5-10mph.  Monday... partly sunny, temps in the mid-70s with North winds at 10-15mph.  Monday night... clear skies, temps in the low-70s and North breezes at 5-10mph.  Since it's a crapola day and the last of the Friday's for beach tips... I'm refraining from posting until next year.  No one pays any attention to my beach tips anyway, as evident from the beach manners more people portray more often than not.  I'm not sure why there aren't any beach manners or observing rules, but it'll always be amazing and jaw-dropping for me.  Until next year you beach-goers... have a nice off-season!

Rip Current: Moderate: If daring to go into the ocean today with this down-trodden weather, I'd reconsider as the rip currents are dangerous and I doubt if all the lifeguards will be on duty with the rains and winds today.  If you have any common sense, I'd pick today to use it!

Only a couple more Fridays in season so here are those ol' Friday Beach Tips...
*Beach Stuff - what to pack... bottled water, a spray bottle of water for you never know what, a hat, footwear, towel, sunblock, insect repellent (for the "West winds" that bring biting green head flies), first aid kit (I include a tiny bottle of vinegar for jelly fish stings), shade (umbrella, canopy of some type), a bungee cord to secure your umbrella for those windy days, something to read, sanitizing wipes, a small trash bag to collect any trash you accumulate.
*When setting up your spot (campsite) at the beach, give those around you a little courtesy and be kind as to not to set up too close to them.  It's always amazing to watch arriving folk completely unaware of their actions as they begin setting up their umbrella, blanket and chair only inches away from those folks already settled in and believe it or not, there's no one else yet at the beach except you. It often feels like new arrivals seek out others to sit close to.  It happens more often than not and I have yet to figure out this strange phenomenon. Most beaches are huge (with the exception of North Wildwood).  First Avenue beach has become more popular this year as that beach grows while the JFK Blvd beach shrinks.
*Know your "tide" times.  You can always ask the lifeguard as they will know.  If the tide is at its highest when you arrive, you can set up right at the water line and watch the beach grow bigger and bigger as the tide slips into its 6 hour low tide. It takes 6 hours for the tide to go from High to Low and then turn around and begin to go from Low to High (12 hour total).
*Tips for setting up your umbrella: be aware of the wind direction and wind speed.  On a windy day, take those extra steps to secure your umbrella.  Unbrellas should be secured at least a foot into the beach sand.  Sand screws or sand grabbers are great for securing umbrellas and even better if you dig a hole first before twisting that screw in and then packing it with sand.  Also, a bungee cord attaching the umbrella to your cooler or beach cart works wonders. It's not uncommon to see umbrellas launched by the winds and more often than not into unknowing folks who are about to be impaled by an airborne, out of control umbrella. And, while the entire family is in the ocean not realizing that their umbrella is 2 blocks away.  Remember, when opening your umbrella... always face the wind as this phenomenon seems that more often than not, folks turn their back on the wind and open the umbrella. Thus... you now have an inside out, uncontrolled umbrella on your hands.
*Beach Etiquette.  Wildwood has powdery sand.  It's soft and dusty. When you walk directly next to someone who's laying on their blanket or sitting on their beach chair, your flip-flopped, kicked-up sand will almost certainly be tossed all over them; especially if it's breezy.  Be conscientious how and where you're walking. Teach your children these same courtesies at the beach. Explain that it's not okay to run or chase one another around someone else's blanket or chair. On a breezy day, you will be covered in a light coating of sand thanks to wind but also some of those careless beach folk.
*If shaking out towels or blankets, be conscious of the wind direction and always shake away from those in the line of your "sand" fire. I've seen toddlers who take off running usually onto anyone's blanket in their path.  Here's a bit of advice for parents of toddlers on the beach (1-2 year olds)... bring a "pack-n-play" for them as I can assure you that your beach day will be much more enjoyable with those babes surrounded with toys and snacks in their little mesh, private encampment.  I recently saw a young couple of a baby not old enough to walk, dig a round trench about 6" deep and place a piece of plastic (much like a shower curtain) over the 2-3' wide hole and fill it with the ocean water so the babe could be entertained and cooled off in their own little pool.  It was an ingenious way to keep the baby happy for a long period of time.
*Phone use... take it somewhere else. Talking loudly or working on your phone for all of us to enjoy really sucks.  Phone calls should be taken as far away from all the hordes of people as possible.  Go to the Dunes.  Trust me, no one wants to hear your conversation; especially on "speaker".
*There is "no smoking" of any type on the beach.  Wildwood Crest has a designated smoking area by the dunes.  There's "no smoking" on the boardwalk.  New Jersey has legalized Marijuana and you can smoke it privately on your property but you can't do it in public.  There are no Pot dispensaries in Wildwood.
*For the pooches, there are two dog parks right on the beach.  At 24th and the Beach in North Wildwood and one in Wildwood between Glenwood and Maple on the Beach.  Dogs must always be on a leash when not in the dog parks. And, you can walk your dog on the beach when lifeguards are NOT at their posts and only then.  No dog walking on the boardwalk at all.
*If you enjoy music on the beach... remember to pack your headphones.  Believe it or not, the majority of beach folk would much rather listen to the sounds of the surf; not your choice of music blasting next to them from your Bluetooth speakers.  Sorry... but it's something that happens a lot and it sucks.
*Feeding seagulls is a no-no.  Eat and snack smartly.  Using flailing hands when expressing oneself while holding lunch is a magnet for swooping gulls.  Drop just one potato chip and you'll have seagull havoc.  Eat conscientiously under your umbrella or chair canopy.  Seagulls are vultures and are smart and endlessly eyeing beach goers eating habits.  They're relentless in trying to find the opportune moment to swoop down and pluck lunch right out of your hand or mouth (seen it happen many times).  By the way, seagulls know "chip bags" and if you have an unsupervised beach bag with chip bags exposed, they'll think nothing of helping themselves to that bag and will share their newly acquired bag of Lays Chips with all their gulls family and friends while you're in the ocean without a care in the world.
*Playing ball, Frisbee, horseshoes, corn hole, kite-flying, ladder toss, spike ball, paddle ball, volley ball, Kan-jam, beach darts etc. shouldn't be played where beach-goers are camped.  Play ball and games away from where no one is sitting (it's only common sense and respectful).
*Observe all posted signs and warnings... Beach closures due to weather, rip currents or storms, surfing only on "surfing" beaches, no alcohol or pot, no dogs or pets.  If in doubt, just ask the lifeguards.
*Never leave trash on the beach.  Better yet, pick up any that you may see whether it's yours or not.  There are many, many trash and recycle containers on the beach and surrounding areas.  You might as well use them rather than let all that trash drift off and fly into the ocean for the fish to eat or get tangled in. Remember... whatever the fish eat, we eat too.  Plastic is an epidemic.  Speaking of plastic... New Jersey no longer has plastic bags at stores and shops.  It's now all about bringing your reusable bags when you shop to save the planet from those "fly-away" plastic ones.
*Lastly, be courteous and respectful.  Courtesy is key.  Be kind and considerate of all those enjoying this beautiful moment at the beach along with you. Keep the profanity at home.  It's a lot of fun being at the beach.  Let's enjoy together. Happy Beaching!

Coastal Flood Advisory with High Rip Current Alert Today

This Morning's Webcam Shot - North WW

Mornin'!  It's 72° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 96% with a dewpoint of 71°.  Winds are out of the South at 10-15mph.  Ms Sun's up and doing her best to shine through this morning's cloud cover.  We'll have a mix of sun and clouds this morning with scattered rain and thunderstorms developing this afternoon (60-70% chance).  Storms could be intense with damaging winds.  Temps will be in the upper 70s with South winds at 10-20mph +gusting.  Tonight... 70% chance of thunderstorms, cloudy after midnight, temps around 70° and SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... intervals of sun and clouds, temps around 80° and W-SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow night... cloudy, chance of rain (40-50% chance), low-70s and W-SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tuesday... sunny, mid-70s, NW winds at 5-10mph.  We're under a Coastal Flood Advisory and a High Rip Current Alert.  Tomorrow's the Full Blue Super Moon, the first of 4 Super moons in a row.  It means that its 90% of its closest approach to earth appearing 30% brighter and 14% larger than  usual ("moon illusion").  What's not an illusion is that the moon will have an affect on our tides which will be much higher than usual.  If we have torrential downpours during that time of high tides, we'll no doubt have coastal/tidal flooding.  Be aware of your high tide times and low-lying (flood-zone) areas.  Don't drive through flood waters. And, thanks to Ernesto we'll have serious risky Rip Currents today.  Do not enter the ocean unless you're near a lifeguard.  They'll probably instruct you to stay out of the water or only go in ankle deep.  Be safe out there!

Mornin'!  It's 71° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 86% with a dewpoint of 66°.  Breezes are out of the South at 6-8mph.  And, Ms Sun has risen over the horizon but is currently blocked by cloud cover.  She's trying to shine through but the clouds seem to winning this one at the moment.  We're going to definitely see sunshine this morning but the grayness and clouds will be tagging along.  Expect a partly sunny start to the day with temps near 80° and S-SE winds at 10-15mph.  By late this morning / early afternoon it'll become cloudy.  Tonight... cloudy, thunderstorms developing late in the evening (85% chance) with temps around 70° with S-SE winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... scattered showers and/or thunderstorms especially early in the day, some storms could contain strong gusty winds, temps in the upper 70s with S-SE winds at 10-20mph.  Chance of rain tomorrow is 50%.  Tomorrow night... still 50% chance of rain, temps in the low-70s with S-SE winds at 10-20mph.  Monday... partly cloudy skies, 25% chance of rain, temps near 80° and W-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Monday night... partly cloudy, 25% chance of rain, temps in the upper 60s with W-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Monday is the Full Moon.  We could see some storms this weekend and the probability for high, very rough, dangerous surf (due to the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto), possibly even tidal floods during the high tide times if we get those thunderstorms so be aware of your surroundings.  Don't drive through flood waters and be aware of the high tide times and low-lying areas on the island.
High Tide: 6:32PM
Low Tide: 12:00PM
Ocean Temp: 73°

More Great Weather Today

Mornin'!  It's 69° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 86% with a dewpoint of 65°.  It's still dark, clear and starlit as Ms Sun's due to cross the ocean's horizon in about a half hour from now.  Breezes are out of the West at 2-3mph.  Another beauty is on tap with plentiful sunshine, temps around 80° and Southerly breezes at 10-15mph.  Tonight... partly clear, temps back to where they are now... 69° and Southerly breezes at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... we could be feeling the effects of Hurricane Ernesto with much high tides along with extremely rough surf and winds and some weekend rain on and off.. It'll be partly cloudy during the morning tomorrow becoming cloudy by the afternoon, temps in teh upper 70s and Southerly winds kicking up at 10-20mph with 20% chance of rain.  Tomorrow night... 60% chance of rain, temps around 70° and S-SE winds at 15-20mph.  Sunday... a mix of sun and clouds, 50% chance of scattered thunderstorms, temps in the upper 70s and S-SE winds at 15-20mph.  Sunday night... rain likely in the evening (70% chance), temps in the upper 60s and Southerly winds at 10-15mph.   Monday... partly cloudy for the start of the day with increasing cloud cover and showers developing later in the day, chance of rain is 40%, temps in the upper 70s and SW winds at 10-15mph. Monday night... rain (40% chance) with clearing late into the overnight, temps around 65° with W-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tuesday may have some rain going on throughout the day.  Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday next week look A-OK.
High Tide: 5:41PM
Low Tide: 11:02AM
Ocean Temp: 72°
Sunrise: 6:14AM
Sunset: 7:52PM
UV Index: 8.1
Rip Current: Moderate Risk (only swim near a lifeguard as the rip currents could be a very big challenge when entering the ocean).
Here are those ol' Friday Beach Tips...

Another Beauty Ahead

Mornin'!  It's 69° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's up again at 91% but the dewpoint is low at 62°.  Winds are out of the N-NW at 2-3mph and are barely there.  Ms Sun's on the rise and will be crossing the horizon any minute now.  Expect another beauty today (much like yesterday) with plentiful sunshine, temps around 80° and W-NW winds at 5-10mph.  The afternoon winds could shift out of the West so pack the insect repellent for those green-head biting flies just in case.  They always seem to find those West winds to catch a ride to the beaches. Today's Webcam Shot - WW Crest
Mornin'!  It's 69° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's down this morning at 83% with a dewpoint of 64°.  Breezes are out of the N-NE at 5-7mph.  It feels considerably different as the air is dryer and cooler; not a lot of that soupy, dampness in the air.  It's also cloudy at the moment as Ms Sun is trying to peek through the clouds while painting the sky and clouds with lovely pastels.  There's a 20% chance of an isolated shower this morning as well.  Expect a partly sunny day with temps near 80° and N-NW winds at 5-10mph.  Tonight... mostly clear, temps in the mid-upper 60s and SW winds at 5mph.  Tomorrow... sunny, temps around 80° with NW winds at 5-10mph.  Tuesday... mostly sunny, temps in the upper 70s and North winds at 5-10mph.  Wednesday... Tornado Watch Posted For Today

Mornin'!  It's 71° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 98% with a dewpoint of 74°.  It's sunny and very, very windy at the moment.  Winds are howling out of the S-SE at 25-30mph +gusting.   In fact, the National Weather Service has issued a "tornado watch" until 2pm today for Cape May County.  If any day is the day to hunker down... it's today. The leftovers of Hurricane Debby have arrived so get your stuff secured and take precautions against this incredibly windy, potentially dangerous day ahead.  Other than these very stiff winds, we're expected to have scattered showers and/or thunderstorms developing by this afternoon.  Temps will be in the upper 70s with South winds at 25-35mph +gusting of up to 40mph.  Chance of rain is 60%.  Tonight... rain and thunderstorms (80% chance), temps in the low-70s and SW winds at 15-25mph +gusting.  Tomorrow... sunny, temps in the low-80s and calm winds out of the W-NW at 5-10mph.  Sunday... partly sunny, temps in the upper 70s and calm winds.

New Moon Sunday

Today's Webcam Shot - North WW

Mornin'!  It's 70° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 90% with a dewpoint of 72°.  Winds are out of the S-SW at 10-20mph.  And, Ms Sun's shining along with clouds surrounded the island.  It's a lovely morning.  It's also the "New Moon" (invisible moon) today.  The New Moon and Full Moon both bring much higher than normal tides which is important to know when you're on an island especially if heavy rain or storms are in the forecast like today and tonight.  We did get a good ol' thunderstorm pass through last evening early.  Not much in the line of rain but lots of stiff winds, thunder and lightning.  For today, expect partly cloudy / partly sunny skies with 70% chance of rain and/or thunderstorms passing through again.  Temps will be in the low-80s with S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tonight... partly cloudy with 60% chance of rain and/or thunderstorms, temps in the low 70s and W-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... sunny, temps in the mid-80s and S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  If we do get those tropical downpours, be aware of high tide times and where you drive or park your vehicle.  Know your low-lying areas on the island and don't drive through flood waters in the event we see coastal flooding today.  Keep your eye on the sky (and doppler) today!

Here are those ol' Friday Beach Tips...
Sand screws or sand grabbers are great for securing umbrellas and it's best to dig a hole first before twisting that screw in and packing the sand in. I've seen it happen many times.  Oh... when opening your umbrella... always face the wind as this phenomenon never disappoints as most of the time, folks turn their back on the wind and open the umbrella. Thus... you now have an inside out, uncontrolled umbrella on your hands.
*Beach Etiquette.  When you walk directly next to someone who's laying on their blanket or sitting on their beach chair, your kicked up sand will almost certainly be tossed all over them; especially if it's breezy.  Be conscientious of what you're doing and where you're walking. Teach your children courtesy at the beach. Explain that it's not okay to run or chase one another around someone else's blanket or chair.  Wildwood sand is very light and powdery.  On a breezy day, one can be covered in a light coating of sand thanks to careless folk around you.
