Got A Cloudy Stretch Ahead

Mornin'!  It's 75° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's a whopping 98% with a dewpoint of 74°. It's cloudy with barely a breeze out of the S-SE at 3-6mph.  There's anywhere from 40% to 70% chance of rain throughout the day with the possibility of thunderstorms this morning as well as passing rain showers this afternoon.  After just checking our doppler, there's not much to report although the Nat'l Weather Service has posted a "Flood Watch" until this evening.  They're reporting that we could see flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall.  The optimal word is "could" see flooding as that doppler is detecting storm velocity and location with heavy rain systems above us and around us in the Toms River / Trenton area of NJ as well as the Cape May bubble breaking up those stormy systems heading our way from Delaware as they think they're making their way here.  One thing is for certain, the air is humid and heavy at the moment and the cloud cover is giving us a break from a morning "hot" sunrise.  With all that said, expect a chance of rain showers with temps in the mid-80s and S-SE winds at 5-10mph today.  Keep your eye on the sky (or doppler).  Tonight... 25% chance of rain, temps in the low-mid 70s and NE winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... 25% chance of rain with cloudy conditions, temps in the low-80s and NE winds at 10-15ph.  Tomorrow night... cloudy, temps around 70° and NE winds at 10-15mph.  Wednesday... sunny, temps around 80° and E-NE winds at 10-15mph.  Wednesday night... partly to most clear, temps in the low-70s and South winds at 5-10mph.

Another Warm One

This Morning's Webcam Shot - North WW
Mornin'!  It's 77° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 82% with a dewpoint of 72°. It feels like 77° which is somewhat refreshing after the last two days.  This "Heat Advisory" remains in effect until 8PM tonight.  Expect a heat index of 100° today again.  We actually got up to 104° yesterday (according to my porch thermometer).  There's also a "Code Orange" air quality alert posted today.  Sensitive groups (children, asthmatic folk, heart and lung disease sufferers) will feel the impact of today's air quality as the concentration of air pollution is very unhealthy.  It's currently cloudy and gray and we've received not a drop of rain from any of those late night - overnight storms surrounding us.  That Cape May bubble was working overtime.
Today will be partly to mostly sunny once Ms Sun breaks through this thick morning cloud cover.  Temps will be in the upper 80s / low 90s and who knows maybe even hotter with SE winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... 40% chance of rain and scattered thunderstorms with cloudy conditions overnight.  We could see damaging winds from some of those storms, temps will be in the mid-70s and SE winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... cloud with occasional rain showers (40% chance), temps in the mid-80s and SE winds at 5-10mph. Tomorrow night... 70% chance of rain showers and possible thunderstorms, temps in the low-mid 70s and E-NE winds at 10-15mph.

250th Independence Day!

Mornin'!  Happy 4th of July!  Happy 250th Birthday to the USA!  The "Heat Advisory" continues throughout today into this evening.
It's 82° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 81% with a dewpoint of 76°.  The heat index is feeling like 92° at 6AM.  No birds chirping and squawking this morning. We're going to have sunshine to start then a few afternoon clouds.  A slight possibility of a passing stray shower and/or thunderstorm for this afternoon.  Temps will be in the mid-upper 90s.  Yesterday we hit 104° (according to my porch thermometer).  Tonight... partly cloudy, becoming cloudy after midnight, 25% chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm, temps around 75° and West winds shifting from the South at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... partly sunny, temps in the mid-80s and SE winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... considerable cloudiness, 40% chance of rain, temps in the mid-70s and E-SE winds at 10-15mph.  Monday... a rainy day on tap (70% chance) with cloudy conditions, temps around 80° and SE winds at 10-20mph.  Monday night... rain (80% chance), temps in the low-mid 70s and S-SE winds at 10-15mph.  Continue to take precautions due to this heat wave we're in the midst of at least until tonight.  Drink plenty of water, if possible stay indoors with air-conditioning, stay out of the sun, check on neighbors and relatives.  Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, limit strenuous activities and exercise.  Take action if you feel or see signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Friday's Beach Tips and Beach Etiquette Techniques (for what it's worth): There are beach smarts and etiquette happening for sure but not quite up to par.  On a regular basis, some beach-goers never cease to amaze as they display that they haven't got a clue how to plan an easier, pleasant, fun, and respectful beach day.  Following these tips is one way to help.
*Beach Stuff - what to pack... bottled water, a spray bottle of water for you never know what, a hat, footwear, towel, sunblock, insect repellent, first aid kit (I include a tiny bottle of vinegar for jelly fish stings), shade (umbrella, canopy of some type), a bungee cord, attachable sand-bag, umbrella screw etc. to secure your umbrella for those windy days, something to read, sanitizing wipes, a small trash bag to collect any trash you accumulate. Oh... speaking of "bags" there are no free bags provided in grocery or convenient stores in New Jersey. Plastic bags are a big "no-no" here.
*When setting up your spot (campsite) at the beach, give those around you a little courtesy and be kind as to not to set up too close to them.  It's always amazing to watch arriving folk completely unaware of their actions as they begin setting up their umbrella, blanket and chair only inches away from those folks already settled in and believe it or not, there's no one else yet at the beach except you. It often feels like new arrivals seek out others to sit close to.  It happens more often than not and I have yet to figure out this strange phenomenon.  There's an enormous amount of empty beach and a massive amount of space for everybody yet settling down too close to someone seems to be more common than not.  It's very weird.  By the way, I'm primarily talking about Wildwood and Wildwood Crest's beaches.  North Wildwood has a bit of a "small" beach issue and it's common to gather more densely.
*Know your "tide" times.  You can always ask the lifeguard as they will know.  If the tide is at its highest when you arrive, you can set up right at the water line. It takes 6 hours for the tide to recede from High to Low and then turn around and begin to go from Low to High (12 hour total).
*Know your wind direction... if a "West" wind is on the forecast, you can count on the biting greenhead flies as they catch the Westerly "land" breezes and then come looking for you and are as hungry as mosquitoes.  Always remember to pack that insect repellent along with sunscreen.
*Tips for setting up your umbrella:  it's about that "wind direction" along with wind speed.  On a windy day, take those extra steps to secure your umbrella.  Umbrellas should be secured at least a foot into the beach sand.  Sand screws or sand grabbers are great for securing umbrellas and even better if you dig a hole first before twisting that screw in and then packing it with sand.  Also, a bungee cord or sand bag attached to the umbrella then to your cooler or beach cart works wonders. It's common to see umbrellas launched by the winds and more often than not into unknowing folks who are about to be impaled by an airborne, out of control umbrella. And, while the entire family is in the ocean not realizing that their umbrella is 2 blocks away and the person safely retrieving it has no idea who the umbrella belongs to.  Also, when opening your umbrella... face into the wind. For some reason, folks turn their back on the wind and open the umbrella. Thus... you now have an inside out, out of control parachute along with those gusts of wind on your hands.
*Beach Courtesy.  Wildwood has soft, powdery sand. When you walk directly next to someone who's laying on their blanket, your kicked-up sand will almost certainly be tossed all over them; especially if it's breezy.  Be conscientious of where you're walking. Teach your children these same courtesies at the beach. Explain that it's not okay to run or chase one another around someone else's blanket or chair. On a breezy day, you will be covered in a light coating of sand thanks to wind but even more so due to some of those thoughtless beach folk. Oh, the same goes for that Suntan lotion... when you use the "spray" sunscreen, be aware of where all that misty sunscreen is going (most into the breeze for others around you). Here's an idea... spray with one hand as you cup the nozzle with the other applying as you deflect the spray from your neighbors eyes and mouth.
*If shaking out towels or blankets, be conscious of that wind direction and always shake away from those sitting nearby.
*Suggestion for those with babies or toddlers...  plan your beach day with taking a "pack-n-play" or a tiny blow-up swimming pool for them as I can assure you that your beach day will more enjoyable with those babes in their safe little private encampment as they're able to splash, play, eat and sleep while you enjoy your day at the beach.

*Phone use... take it somewhere else. Talking loudly or working on your phone for all of us to share with you really sucks.  Phone calls should be taken as far away from the people relaxing on the beach as possible.  Go to the Dunes.  Trust me, no one wants to hear your conversation; especially "on speaker".
*There is "no smoking" of any type on the beach.  There's "no smoking" on the boardwalk.  New Jersey has legalized Marijuana and you can smoke it privately on your property but not openly in public.  The only Pot dispensaries are in North Cape May and West Cape May and none in Wildwood.
*For the pooches, there are two dog parks right on the beach.  At 24th at the Beach in North Wildwood and one in Wildwood between Glenwood and Maple on the Beach.  The Glenwood Avenue dog beach has just been rated #1 dog park in the country! Dogs must always be on a leash when not in the dog parks. And, you can walk your dog on the beach when lifeguards are NOT at their posts and only then.  In Wildwood Crest... no dogs on the beach at all.  Also, there's no dog walking on the boardwalk allowed at all.
*If you enjoy music on the beach... remember to pack your headphones.  Believe it or not, the majority of beach folk would much rather listen to the sounds of the surf; not your choice of music blasting next to them from your Bluetooth speakers.  Sorry... but it's something that happens all the time and it sucks when you can't hear the surf because of your music.
*Feeding seagulls is a no-no.  Eat and snack smartly.  Using flailing hands when expressing oneself while holding lunch is a magnet for swooping gulls.  Drop just one potato chip and you'll have seagull havoc.  Eat conscientiously under your umbrella or chair canopy.  Seagulls are vultures and are smart and endlessly eyeing beach goers eating habits.  They're relentless in trying to find the opportune moment to swoop down and pluck lunch right out of your hand or mouth (seen it happen many times). They watch and wait and know.  By the way, seagulls know "chip bags" and if you have an unsupervised beach bag with chip bags exposed, they'll think nothing of helping themselves to that bag and will share their newly acquired bag of potato chips with all the other gulls while you're in the ocean taking a dip.
*Playing ball, Frisbee, horseshoes, corn hole, kite-flying, ladder toss, spike ball, paddle ball, volley ball, Kan-jam, beach darts etc. shouldn't be played by the people sitting on the beach.  Play ball and games at the back of the beach away from where everyone is sitting (it's only common sense and respectful).
*Observe all posted signs and warnings... Beach closures due to weather, rip currents or storms, surfing only on "surfing" beaches, no alcohol or pot, no dogs or pets.  If in doubt, just ask the lifeguards.
*Never leave trash on the beach.  Better yet, pick up any that you may see whether it's yours or not.  There are many, many trash and recycle containers on the beach and surrounding areas.  You might as well use them rather than let all that trash drift off and fly into the ocean for the fish to eat or get tangled in. Remember... whatever the fish eat, we eat too.  Plastic is an epidemic.  Speaking of plastic... New Jersey no longer has plastic bags at stores and shops.  It's now all about bringing your own (reusable) bags when you shop to save the planet from those "fly-away" plastic ones.
*Lastly, be courteous and respectful.  Courtesy is key.  Be kind and considerate of all those enjoying this beautiful moment at the beach along with you. Teach your children how to do it. Keep the profanity at home (although the "F" word is a common word in the English language now and is used almost regularly).  It's fun and relaxing at the beach.  Let's enjoy it together.
Happy Beaching!

Heat Advisory In Effect

Mornin'!  It's 75° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 90% with a dewpoint of 72°.  Breezes are out of the SW at 5-10mph.  Ms Sun's up and shining through the hazy sky.  There's a "Heat Advisory" in effect from noon today until 8PM on Saturday.  Heat Index values will be between 95-105° meaning that's what it will feel like along the Atlantic coast.  These high temps and humidity may cause illness.  The hottest conditions will occur tomorrow.  For today... sunshine, hazy, humid with temps around 90° and S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tonight... clear skies, temps in the mid-70s and SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow... sunny, temps in the low-mid 90s and W-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... clear, temps in the upper 70s with W-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Saturday... sunny, 25% chance of a stray passing thunderstorm or rain shower, temps in the low-90s and W-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Saturday night... partly to mostly cloudy with 40% chance of rain, temps in the mid-70s and W-NW winds at 5-10mph.  Sunday... partly cloudy with 25% chance of rain, temps in the low-mid 80s and E-NE winds at 10-15mph.  Sunday night... 60% chance of rain, temps in the low-70s and Easterly winds at 10-15mph.  Monday... 60% chance of rain and Monday night... 75% chance of rain.  This "Code Orange" that we're in means air pollution concentration could be detrimental to sensitive groups (those with asthma, heart or lung disease, elderly, children etc.)  Avoid strenuous activity or exercise outdoors.  Drink plenty of fluids (water is best), stay in air-conditioning, stay out of the sun, check on neighbors and/or relatives.  Wear lightweight / loose fitting clothes, do activities in the early morning or evening.  If you feel symptoms or overcome from heat exhaustion or  even heat stroke, call 911.  Even living here by the beach and always having the sand and surf and sea breeze to enjoy, when it becomes this hot there's always a risk of becoming extremely overheated and becoming sick due to that blazing sun and all that includes... extremely hot sand, asphalt, the "very long" walk from your room-house-car to the beach.  It can all takes its toll when that sea breeze may not be enough to keep you comfortable and out of that danger zone. It can still be extremely hot on the beach.  Be smart.

It's 72° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 87% with a dew-point of 69°.  It's partly clear as Ms Sun's up and shining but off and on due to some cloud cover.  Winds are out of the S-SW at 10-15mph.  The weather folk are saying there's a 80% chance of rain this morning.  I checked the doppler and the rain system they're speaking of, seems to break apart as it hits our section of the map.  You know... that Cape May Bubble is about to happen and I'm pretty sure that's going to be the scenario this morning... no rain here.  Expect a partly sunny day with temps in the mid-upper 80s and on the windy side later this afternoon / early evening that will shift from the S-SW to the South at 15-20+gusting.  Tonight... clear, temps in the low-mid 70s and S-SW winds at 20-30mph.  Tomorrow... Sunny, temps near 90° and S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow night... clear, temps in the mid-70s with S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Friday... sunny, hot and humid, temps in the 90s with W-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Friday night... clear, temps in the mid-70s and West winds at 10-15mph.  Saturday... sunny, a stray shower possible, temps around 90° with West winds at 10-15mph.  Saturday night... partly to mostly cloudy, 50% chance of rain, temps in the mid-70s and West winds at 10-15mph.  Sunday... partly cloudy early, 30% chance of rain showers, temps around 90° with NW winds shifting to the S-SE at 10-15mph.  Sunday night... 70% chance of rain, temps in the low-70s and SE winds at 5-10mph.

See Ya Next Year June!

This Morning's Webcam Shots - North WW
Mornin'!  It's 69° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 90% with a dewpoint of 68°.  It's partly cloudy as Ms Sun rises and paints the sky and those milky clouds with all her pastels. Winds are nothing to report out of the SW at 1mph.  It's very still this morning as the island birds are happily showing their pleasure with the weather on this last day of June.  It'll be a sunny day with a mix of some milky clouds, temps in the low-mid 80s and S-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tonight... a few clouds from time to time, temps in the low-70s and S-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... sunny, temps in the low-mid 80s and S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow night... partly clear, temps in the low-70s and S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Thursday... sunny and hot with temps near 90° and S-SW winds at 10-20mph.  Thursday night... clear skies, temps in the low-mid 70s and SW winds at 10-20mph.   Friday... sunny, temps in the low-90s and SW winds at 10-20mph.  Friday night... clear, temps in the upper 70s and W-SW winds at 10-15mph.   Saturday... sunny, temps in the low-90s and SW winds at 10-15mph.  Saturday night... partly cloudy, 30% chance of rain, temps in the mid-70s and W-SW winds at 10-15mph.  Sunday... partly clear start, increasing clouds with 40% chance of showers later in the day, temps in the low-mid 80s and E-SE winds at 10-15mph.  Sunday night... 70% chance of rain, temps in the low-70s.  A couple things... I don't usually give the upcoming weather this far out as I've found out that weather is without question very fickle and trans-formative. But, since it's the holiday week and weekend and many folk are either here already or in the midst of prepping for their seashore getaway, I figured I'd report what the weather-pros are saying now.  One thing is for certain... we're about to have a major heatwave beginning Thursday (maybe even a little preview tomorrow).  It won't be anything like the mainland or Philly area, but it's going to be hot down the shore.  That means high temps and humidity.  Prepare accordingly if dealing with this challenging heat up ahead.  You should know the drill by now... plenty of water, footwear, hat, shade, air-conditioning etc.  And, of course I wanted to say my farewell to June.  She's had some nice weather this year and for that I'm grateful.  Until next year and our paths cross again June, see ya on the other side!

New Moon Flag Day

Mornin'! Happy Flag Day! I initially forgot all about It being Flag day this morning when blogging.  Ya know... company, getting to the gym first thing, making Sunday morning breakfast, stripping sheets, seeing my guests out the door... completely sidetracked. Sorry about that!  Hubby (the Veteran) remembered thankfully.  The flag-is-a-flying now!
It's 73° in Wildwood NJ. Humidity's 81% with a dewpoint of 68°. Ms Sun's up and shining in the deep blue sky with some light clouds sprinkled around here and there. Winds are out of the SW at 5-10mph.  It's lovely.  Expect a mix of sun and clouds with a very slight risk of a passing stray shower.  Temps will be in the low-80s with wind ramping up out of the South at 15-25mph.  Tonight... 80% chance of rain with the potential for severe thunderstorms, temps around 70° with SW winds at 15-25mph.  Tomorrow... sunny with a few clouds in the mix, temps near 80° and NW winds at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow night... clear, temps in the low-mid 60s and N-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tuesday... a mix of sun and clouds and cooler with temps in the low-70s and NE winds shifting to the S-SE at 10-15mph. Lovely Saturday

Mornin'!  It's 79° in Wildwood NJ.  Humidity's 65% with a dewpoint of 65°.  Ms Sun's up and shining brightly.  Winds are currently out of the N-NW at 5-10mph.  It's going to be a lovely day down the Shore.  I have to report that there is a "Coastal Flood Advisory" posted all day into this evening mostly likely due to the upcoming New Moon tomorrow.  It's a "Minor" tidal flooding advisory but still shouldn't be ignored.  Know your high tide times, low-lying areas on the island, remember that the back of the island's high tide (the marsh/bay side) is an hour later than the ocean side), expect the possibility of some road closures, don't drive through flood waters and be aware of where you park your vehicle as flood waters will damage the undercarriage of your vehicle and lead to costly repairs.  I wouldn't be surprised if this Advisory continues throughout the entire weekend due to the moon and possibility of rain tomorrow night.
As for this weekend's weather... today will be plentiful sunshine, temps in the upper 80 / low 90s (yesterday we got up to 96°), with West winds at 5-10mph.  Tonight  clear, temps around 70° and SW winds at 5-10mph.  Tomorrow... sunny, temps in the low-mid 80s and Southerly winds at 15-25mph.  Tomorrow night... 50% chance of scattered rain and/or thunderstorms, temps in the upper60s/low70s and W-SW winds at 15-25mph.  Monday... a mix of sun and clouds, temps in the upper 70s and NW winds at 10-20mph.  Oh... if heading to beach today, remember the insect repellent as West winds bring the greenhead "biting" flies.

Another Hot One

Current Conditions - North WW
Mornin'!  It's 75° in Wildwood NJ. It's partly cloudy while Ms Sun rises and does her best to brighten things up.  Humidity's 81% with a dewpoint of 70°.  Winds are light out of the West at 5-10mph.  It'll be mostly sunny early with the chance of some scattered strong thunderstorms this afternoon (40% chance).  Some storms could contain damaging winds.  Temps will be in the mid-upper 80s.  By the way, we got to 96° yesterday afternoon according to my porch thermometer.  And, I wouldn't be surprised if we're in the 90s again today.  Just saying.  Oh, and just to note, my Air Conditioner went on early yesterday for the first time this year and thankfully kept the perspiration low around here. Today's winds will be out of the W-SW at 10-15mph.  Tonight... partly cloudy with 60% chance of strong storms in the evening turning partly cloudy after midnight.  Temps will drop into the upper 60s wtih W-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... a beauty.  Expect a sunny day with temps in the low-80s and W-NW winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow night... clear, temps in the mid-upper 60s and SW winds at 5-10mph.  Sunday... partly cloudy and breezy, temps around 80° with South winds at 15-25mph.  There's a 25% chance of rain.  Sunday night... 80% chance of rain but it'll end early, temps will drop into the mid-upper 60s and W-SW winds will still remain ramped up at 15-25mph.  The New Moon is Sunday so those high tide times will be much higher tides than normal.  If it's raining on top of that high tide, we could see some tidal/island flooding during those times.

Windy Monday

This Morning's Current Conditions - North WW

Mornin'!  It's 65° in Wildwood NJ.  It's cloudy with stiff winds out of the E-NE at 20-25mph.  Quite a change from yesterday's 91° with barely a breeze weather.  Yes, we got up to 91° according to my back porch thermometer.  It's was a hot one and yet, still no AC on here! I knew the weather would take a drastic change last night and stuck it out without turning my air conditioner on.  And, lo and behold, this morning... a whole different can of worms.  All windows are still open but this time, the cool, stiff breezes are filling my home with sea air as the birds are everywhere happily chirping, and singing their praises.  These morning clouds will eventually give way to afternoon sunshine, temps around 70° and E-NE winds not going anyway at 20-30mph.  Tonight... clear to partly clear, temps in the upper 50s and E-SE winds at 10-15mph.  Tomorrow... partly sunny, temps around 70° again with calmer winds out of the South at 10-20mph.  Tomorrow night... partly cloudy becoming overcast late, temps in the mid-60s and South winds at 10-20mph.  Wednesday and Wednesday night have 30-40% chance of rain showers.
High Tide: 2:12PM
Low Tide: 8:00AM
Ocean Temp: 64.4°

Rip Current: Moderate (Life-threatening rip currents and undertows are possible in the surf zone.  Don't enter the ocean without lifeguards present and they aren't stationed as they are in the summer season yet.  There are patrols but that's not the same as stationed lifeguards at each beach!)
