| Blizzard - February 2010 |
Mornin'! It's 40° in Wildwood NJ. It feels more like 34° with a NE breeze at 5-10mph. It's raining lightly... more like "spitting"out there. We have a Blizzard (named Hernando) Warning stamped on our coast today and tomorrow into tomorrow evening which is basically a warning of a Hurricane but with snow. A blizzard feels like an intense, disorienting assault of stinging, freezing wind with icy pellets and blinding snow reducing visibility of near zero. It has a deafening, unrelenting roar. Navigation is impossible, creating life-threatening conditions and a sense of isolation. This basically calm moment in time will turn to pure chaos later today into this evening. Take this warning very seriously. Expect this early rain to change to snowfall by this afternoon, temps will be in the upper 30s with E-NE winds at 25-35mph +gusting. Tonight... snow, very heavy and intense at times, gusty winds will then lead to blizzard conditions, temps around 30° with N-NW winds at 25-40mph +gusting and with it snowing and blowing all throughout the night... at least 12" of snow expected. One local weather person even mentioned 24". Tomorrow... another 2-4" of snow with temps in the mid-upper 30s and NW winds at 25-35mph +gusting. Tomorrow night... still snowing until around 7PM, NW winds at 15-20mph +gusting and at least another inch possible. On the bright side... Tuesday will be sunny with temps in the upper 30s with NW winds at 15-20mph. Oh... this in very important to note that this isn't a light, fluffy snow that will begin falling this afternoon. It'll be what is referred to as "heart attack" snow. It's heavy, wet and slushy and creates a high risk of heart attacks while shoveling it. The intense physical exertion of lifting heavy snow can push heart rates to 97% of their maximum capacity and is even more demanding than a treadmill stress test. It's a "perfect storm" for cardiovascular issues. Be smart and stay safe.
